JOB SUMMARY
 
To assist and deputise for the A&E Paediatric Lead Nurse in the management and organisation of the Paediatric A&E nursing service, including the teaching and management of more junior staff or those in training.

To clinically lead, assist and support all Paediatric nursing care in the A&E department when on duty.

To provide support and guidance to other members of the team, in relation to child protection and child resuscitation.

To provide a high standard of individualised patient care reflecting individual competencies and education that involves relatives/carer’s as appropriate.

To ensure that care is evidence based and patient centered.

To maintain the positive links with the integrated service and develop the Paediatric A&E area, in line with emergency reform.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE

 

To be responsible for the assessment of Paediatric clients entering the Emergency Department, ensuring prioritisation of treatment, delivery of care and evaluate care given. The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and required to demonstrate procedures and to supervise qualified and/or unqualified staff.

They have overall responsibility for day-to-day management of their clinical area and for ensuring all care is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures maintaining associated records.

As an NMC registrant facilitate learning and development of others. They will provide specialist advice to patients, relatives and members of the multi-disciplinary team. You will demonstrate leadership qualities and be open, transparent and trustworthy. As a Trust employee act with integrity and uphold the values and beliefs of the Trust and the NMC Code of Conduct.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Emergency Department at the Royal Surrey Hospital Emergency Department. We are seeking to recruit a full time Band 6 Paediatric Sister / Charge Nurse into our team. We are looking for an experienced nurse with a minimum of two years’ experience in acute paediatric nursing. The ability to demonstrate experience of shift leading is essential. Experience working in an Emergency Department is preferred, although training is a key part of our department strategy, and we fully support and promote the development of our Paediatric team. 

 Our Paediatric ED sees in the region of 20,000 children a year and is open 24hrs a day. You must to be able to work night shifts, day shifts and weekends. 

Applicants will need to demonstrate a dynamic, hardworking and passionate approach to delivering the highest quality patient care, and role modelling to the junior staff you will be leading. You will gain experience and develop skills relevant to the ED setting. You must have a working knowledge and understanding of current issues in the acute NHS setting as well as in clinical governance and risk management. Our main goal at the Royal Surrey Emergency Department is to provide quality patient centred care, whilst striving as a team and as a Trust, to achieve the national ED targets.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Paediatric nurse
  • Evidence of recent professional updating and relevant personal development.
  • A willingness to undertake or hold the Paediatric A&E course, equivalent.
  • Qualified Mentor
  • PILS
  • Post registration education relevant to post.
Desirable criteria
  • APLS / EPLS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a staff nurse in Paediatric A&E or equivalent environment.
  • Demonstrates professional awareness and knowledge.
  • Understanding of current issues in Acute NHS Setting.
  • Can demonstrate up-to-date clinical credibility / Competence.
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management.
  • Knowledge of current NHS and Professional issues.
  • Experience of 24 hour period of nursing care.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of change management achievements.
