Band 6 Nurse 
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Multiple Sclerosis Team within Frimley Health Foundation Trust!

We are a well-established team of MS Nurses who have a passion for delivering first class care to people living with multiple sclerosis. We are actively involved in research and keen to develop our service further though new and innovative ways of working to meet the needs of our patients. 

You will be working with adults living with MS in an outpatient setting supporting all aspects of their care needs. Home visits will be required with this role alongside running clinics in Outpatients.

You will be based at Frimley Park and work cross site at Heatherwood and Wexham Park. This role will support the MS Nursing Teams in both Frimley Park and Wexham Park. The working week will consist of Monday to Friday, 08.30 – 16.30. A flexible approach to working hours is essential. Weekend working and bank holidays are not required within this role. 

Working within an established MS Nursing Team to provide support to patients living with MS. Aspects of care include supporting the telephone helpline queries, relapse management, advice on symptom management, support with disease modifying therapies, supporting housing/benefit applications etc, offering home visits to patients with higher levels of disability, and running outpatient clinics. Participation in research will also be required. 

 

Main duties of the job

•    Working within an established MS Nursing Team to provide support to patients living with MS. Aspects of care include supporting the helpline queries, relapse management, advice on symptom management, support with disease modifying therapies, supporting housing/benefit applications etc, offering home visits and running outpatient clinics. Participation in research will also be required. 

•    To offer clinical advice to ward staff when they are delivering care for  people with MS.

•    Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings

•    Pharmacovigilance 

•    Management of patients receiving treatment with a disease modifying therapy (DMT)

•    Actively participate in research

•    Provide education to patients, carers and other health professionals

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered general nurse
  • Undertaking or completed further academic study to post graduate diploma level
  • Post-registration qualification/ BSc level
Desirable criteria
  • MS Development Module, previously known as The Hitchin Course
  • Advanced communication skills course
  • Mentorship course

Special Requirements

Essential criteria
  • To be able to work across all 3 hospital sites, Frimley Park, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals.
  • To be able to independently visit patients in their own homes for clinical review, , so require a driving licence and a car
Desirable criteria
  • To be able to independently visit patients in their own homes for clinical review

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience as a Band 5 nurse
  • Experience of working with patients who are living with a long-term progressive disease
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary team working
  • Recognising and interpreting abnormal blood results
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in caring for patients with multiple sclerosis
  • Clinical leadership skills
  • Research and audit experience
  • Experience in running outpatient clinics
  • Experience in the delivery of education to patients and health professionals

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical assessment skills and decision making
  • Analytical skills and awareness of ethical issues, treatment planning and holistic care
  • Can demonstrate effective team working
  • Keyboard skills and IT literacy (Word/EXCEL)
  • Ability to prioritise and manage caseload
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of disease modifying therapies (DMT’s)
  • Negotiating, influencing and counselling/coaching skills
