Job overview

We invite applications for an Enhanced Clinical Fellow in Upper GI Surgery (ST6+ equivalent). The Purpose of the 1 Year fellowship is to provide an exciting opportunity for senior upper GI trainees (ST6 and above), to acquire additional skills in emergency general surgery, elective upper GI surgery and endoscopy including OGD, EUS and ERCP. The Trust has a recognised Robotic Unit and the appointee will be involved and potentially trained in Robotic UGI surgery.

To enable Fellow to become an independent Consultant Surgeon who is able to undertake surgery and train in the above areas.

Main duties of the job

We enjoy a close working relationship with the departments of histopathology, radiology, oncology, palliative care and gastroenterology. The Fellow will have exposure and experience of all aspects of gallstone management including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic bile duct exploration, endoscopic diagnosis and management of choledocholithiasis, hot Gallbladder surgery, management of complex acute and chronic pancreatitis, complex reflux assessment and anti-reflux surgery, staging of upper GI malignancy including EUS.

The clinical Fellow will be on the on-call rota, which will be a 1 in 10. Frimley Park Hospital is a busy DGH serving a population of approximately 440,000. The workload of the department has been increasing steadily and the hospital is working hard to ensure that all registrar hours are compliant with the rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB/BS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration to cover the scope of employment
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes
  • Other degrees e.g. BSc, Masters, PhD (or equivalent)
  • JAG Accreditation
  • Post CCT or CESR

Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience working at middle grade in a surgical speciality
  • Demonstrate experience of teaching & training ST1/2 or equivalent and F1
  • Competent in procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
Desirable criteria
  • Has participated in clinical audit
