Job overview

Due to the creation of the new M-block we are looking for a Band 4 associate practitioner to join the general medical team.

Main duties of the job

·         To work under indirect supervision of physiotherapists in providing a high standard physiotherapy service across the medical team.

·         Assist in the provision of care to patients, supported and supervised by a senior physiotherapist.

·         To manage physiotherapy inpatient handovers on medical wards, prioritising and delegating where necessary.

·         Once competent to carry out an initial assessment of a patient with non-complex needs using an assessment proforma. This will include the gathering of history and physical examination in order to plan and deliver an effective physiotherapy intervention.

·         Carry out clinical tasks, such as prescribe, teach, review and adapt exercises for patients to optimise rehabilitation and maintenance on discharge.

·         Carry out clinical assessments independently such as range of movement, risk assessments, stairs assessment and discharge.

·         Monitor stock of disposable physiotherapy equipment and liaise with the Ward clerk re ordering items.

·         Contribute to the induction of new physiotherapists and physiotherapy students to the medical team.

Clinical

·         To work as a core member of the Trust’s adult Medical Physiotherapy Team.

·         To work effectively within the Trust’s wider Adult Medical Multidisciplinary Team.

·         Within specific guidelines and following training, to be responsible for a clinical caseload working within codes of practice and professional guidelines. This includes patient documentation in both professional and medical notes.

·       To perform complex aspects of patient care in the hospital with direct and indirect supervision such as carrying out assessments, supervised patient exercise sessions with progression of exercises, and formulating and carrying out discharge plans

Education

·         To gain the required knowledge and skills in the relevant technical and clinical procedures, and to maintain those skills working under the Medical Band 4 Competency booklet under the supervision of Senior Physiotherapists.

·         To attend external courses where appropriate giving feedback from any attended.

Management

·         To manage and prioritise a caseload and balance other patient related and professional activities in accordance with the department’s requirements.

·         To undertake patient related administration tasks.

·         To ensure accurate and timely input of notes and statistical information

·         To supervise and appraise a B2/3 therapy assistant.

Communication

·         Demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to patients and their families, ensuring patients feel reassured and supported.

·         Take patient phone calls and seek advice from senior physiotherapists when appropriate, and to use reassurance skills that require tact and persuasion on occasions.
