An Exciting opportunity to join the mortuary team at St Peters Hospital. To lead the department in all the departments functions, body store, post mortem (including forensic post mortem) and facilitating tissue retrieval. To manage a small team of APTs (including a trainee and admin support) In all aspects of mortuary tasks: performing post mortems, the team perform approx. 800 per annum including forensic post mortems, the care of the deceased approx. 2400 admission per annum. The successful candidate will have relevant mortuary experience and be qualified to NVQ level 4 or diploma.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be the professional head of the mortuary staff, working closely with the Designated Individual for the HTA and the Network Mortuary Operations Manager, the post holder will lead and be responsible for the day to day management of staff and resources in the ASPH Mortuary. The post holder will provide the technical lead and expertise within the department to maintain and develop the service. Ensure appropriate staffing levels, gradings, skill mix, equipment and work practices within the department to ensure the maintenance of standards required by the HTA and other regulatory requirements and good mortuary practice. The postholder will also be responsible for preparation of bodies for viewing purposes, the provision and maintenance of adequate training facilities and systems and the development and maintenance of policies and procedures relevant to the provision of Mortuary services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To manage the mortuary in an appropriate manner in order to maintain its standing as both a hospital and public mortuary, and as a receiving site in Surrey for Coroner’s and Forensic deaths. The provision and maintenance of a system for documenting and recording full details relevant to the receipt, processing and release of bodies and tissues/organs. To perform evisceration and body reconstruction techniques to a high standard. To report any incidents in a timely manner using the Trust incident reporting procedure. To aid in the investigation of such incidents in conjunction with the Network Mortuary Operations Manager. To provide day-to-day line management to staff. To appraise staff on a yearly basis with the Network Mortuary Operations Manager. To instruct and train Mortuary APT staff in mortuary techniques to develop expertise within the hospital. To train porters in relevant mortuary procedures. To manage the Statutory and Mandatory compliance of the mortuary team. To keep accurate and compliant training and competency records for all mortuary staff To plan and arrange cover for the mortuary in the event of sickness absence or annual leave, liaising with the Network Mortuary Operations Manager, other BSPS Senior APT staff and the Coroner’s office as required. To manage the servicing and maintenance of mortuary equipment and to plan with outside contractors to ensure the continued availability of mortuary facilities. To keep accurate records of such equipment. To ensure the provision of an effective, high quality office administration service for the mortuary including dealing with post and answering telephone queries. To ensure all paperwork is completed for the correct receipt of bodies DOA and BID in compliance with national legislation and local requirements. To regularly review/ write Mortuary standard operating procedures, and general and COSHH risk assessments, with the Network Mortuary Operations Manager, in line with H&S and HTA requirements. To keep up to date with any legal aspects of the job, for example, HTA and Department of Health initiatives etc. To develop, implement and maintain an up to date contingency plan, with the Network Mortuary Operation Manager, according to the requirements of the Trust, the Coroner’s Officer and emergency planning.
