· Perform general specimen reception room duties at St Peter’s Hospital
· Maintain equipment and keep records in accordance with laboratory guidelines
· Train new staff in the HPV specimen reception room and assist the departmental training officer in maintaining staff competency.
Main duties of the job
· To enter patient details onto the Winpath Enterprise Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and to look up/print previous patient history on to the Open Exeter System.
To liaise with users regarding errors in patient and specimen identification, returning of samples to the sender when appropriate, and recording errors
To follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and to be proactive in the development of these by suggesting improvements, and piloting revisions
To comply with the BSPS health and safety procedures and laboratory codes of practice at all times and adhere to Trust and departmental policies and procedures
To carry out duties within the HPV Cytology Department as and when required by management
To answer telephone enquiries in accordance with laboratory protocol in order to provide an effective and user-friendly service
To be responsible for the training of new starters in HPV Specimen Reception in accordance with departmental protocols.
To deliver refresher training for Band 2 MLA staff in the HPV specimen reception facility
To supervise Band 2 staff in HPV SR when the team supervisors are absent.
To assist the departmental training officer in maintaining the competency of staff in HPV SR.
To have the skills necessary to use the HPV Specimen Reception IT systems including BSPS Laboratory information Management system (LIMS) (Winpath Enterprise) and the CSAS Open Exeter database.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To participate in the reception, checking and labelling of all types of specimens processed by the HPV Cytology department
To enter patient details onto the Winpath Enterprise Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and to look up/print previous patient history on to the Open Exeter System.
To liaise with users regarding errors in patient and specimen identification, returning of samples to the sender when appropriate, and recording errors
To work with potentially hazardous laboratory chemicals appropriately and safely in accordance with laboratory procedures, COSHH and the BSPS Health & Safety Policy
Perform a variety of manual laboratory procedures, under indirect supervision from Registered Biomedical Scientist staff.
To follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and to be proactive in the development of these by suggesting improvements, and piloting revisions
To comply with the BSPS health and safety procedures and laboratory codes of practice at all times and adhere to Trust and departmental policies and procedures
To use and maintain Cytology laboratory equipment within the department according to BSPS, Trust and departmental policies
To ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the specimen preparation laboratories including the correct use of disinfectants and detergents according to COSHH regulations and laboratory protocols
To carry out duties within the HPV Cytology Department as and when required by management

- NVQ level 3 or A level
- Team player, good communicator and motivated.
- Experience of HPV primary screening processes
Desirable criteria
- Willing to undergo training to ensure relevant level of knowledge
- Multi-tasking skills, prioritisation skills and initiative

- Competent using BSPS LIMS i.e. Winpath Enterprise to include accessing patient results and data entry
- Experience and knowledge of routine gynae and/or non gynae processing techniques
- Experience & knowledge required to train and supervise less experienced staff
Desirable criteria
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with all members of staff
- Ability to work to deadlines, well organised and flexible
Applicant requirements
