Job overview

Applications are invited for a 10 PA locum consultant nephrologist post within South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.
 
You would be joining a team of 24 enthusiastic nephrologists working out of a busy regional renal unit based at St Helier, providing renal care throughout South London and Surrey. The appointee will be based at St Helier Hospital with one to two days a week spent providing an outreach general nephrology clinic and caring for a cohort of satellite haemodialysis patients. 
 
The post includes a role in advanced kidney care, including a weekly clinic and multidisciplinary team meeting, based at St Helier.  There is also time in the job plan for regular participation in the multisystem supra regional vasculitis clinic also based at St Helier.  In addition, one PA a week is allocated for the provision of renal procedures and the training of junior doctors to carry out these procedures.
 
All renal consultants are involved in the care of acute nephrology inpatients at St Helier and there is a commitment on a 1 in 12 basis to on call work supported by an SHO and Specialist Trainee.
 
All applicants must have full registration with the GMC and be a holder of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of the award of the CCT or equivalent on the date of interview.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust offers an extensive range of services, including cancerpathologysurgery, and gynaecology to over 490,000 people in south west London and north east Surrey. We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital.

St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • Entered onto the GMC Specialist Registrar or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
  • Approprirate higher medical qualification eg MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for the speciality including renal biopsy and line insertion

Management and administrative

Essential criteria
  • Audit/research
  • Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
  • Supervision of postgraduate trainees
  • Personal time management
  • knowledge of principles of clinical governance
  • Able to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with issues of service organisation and development

Teaching and experience
