Job overview

The post holder will provide an evidence-based service that anticipates and responds to the needs of children with speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties. Speech and language therapy works in partnership with children, their families and with other professions and agencies to reduce the impact of these difficulties on children’s social and emotional development, their learning and their ability to participate in daily life.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the management of a general caseload of children with developmental speech and language disorders / delays, providing assessment, diagnosis and treatment within a community setting.

· To refer children for further investigation or second opinion as required.

· To provide support and training to families and/or nursery / school staff so that programmes can be implemented as part of children’s therapy packages.

· To be involved in the development of the SLT service.

· To be accountable for own professional action and recognise own professional boundaries, seeking advice as appropriate.

· To work across agreed clinical populations managing the implementation of a service that is targeted to need, and supports and empowers families

· To improve health and life chance outcomes for children, by giving every child the opportunity to develop their potential, ensuring early detection and referral of problems.

To participate as a full member of the Sutton Children’s SLT Team.

To act as a resource to the Sutton Health and Care Alliance, SLT service and other agencies.

Principal duties to include:

  1. Provide highly specialist SLT services to adults referred to the community service.
  2. Provide specialist and multi disciplinary assessment of adults taking into account all necessary factors including premorbid skills and environmental factors.
  3. Provide differential diagnosis of the communication/swallowing impairment, clearly define strengths and needs, identify SMART goals and offer an appropriate therapy programme, taking into account the level of understanding, motivation, insight, level of support and self-management potential.
  4. Develop and provide SLT training within the department and to other professionals as well as to families/carers and SLT students (to degree level), SLT assistants and support workers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To demonstrate a well developed knowledge of paediatric therapy, underpinned by current evidence based practice.

· To manage a clinical caseload as an autonomous practitioner.

· To develop the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of a client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness.

· To use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgements / decision making for case management.

· To make appropriate differential diagnoses based on assessment findings.

  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • Knowledge/experience in the use of evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches and practices
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • Registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Knowledge of risk assessment for this client group
