Paediatric Respiratory Nurse Specialist

Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated, skilled and innovative Specialist Nurse with a wide range of experience in respiratory conditions to join our passionate and enthusiastic team.

This post offers a unique opportunity to work alongside medical and specialist nursing colleagues in both the hospital and the community. You will need to act as a resource on the management and treatment of asthma & respiratory conditions in childhood for patients, carers and healthcare professionals and develop strong relationships with both children and their families.

Main duties of the job

The CNS role also includes delivering staff training and education for the management of children with asthma and wheeze across the Trust.

The Band 7 CNS shall be expected to lead and manage his/her own respiratory patient cohort working closely with the interdisciplinary team. This will include provision of expert advice and knowledge in the management and co-ordination within the multidisciplinary service for children and taking a holistic approach to the child and family.

The post holder will be required to oversee the safe discharge of patients from hospital to home, assist in the review of patients in the MDT asthma outpatient clinic and run nurse led clinics where needed. The CNS will be required to arrange and communicate with patients requiring biologics and further investigation for children and young people with difficult to treat or severe asthma.

The post holder will work as part of the Respiratory team, covering Asthma, Allergies and Cystic Fibrosis. There is a wide scope for development within the team to cover these aspects of respiratory.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Sick Children’s Nurse (NMC Sub –Part 1 (Children) /RN Child
  • Relevant specialist post basic programme in paediatric respiratory and management
  • First degree in nursing, or demonstrable experience at this level
Desirable criteria
  • Completed / completing a Master’s pathway
  • Diploma in asthma care

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills
  • Ability to initiate, sustain and evaluate change
  • Previous experience of formal / informal teaching of patients & staff
  • Able to work autonomously and within a team and ability to work collaboratively
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in audit and evaluation
  • Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor to others
  • Previous community nursing experience Non-Medical prescribing course
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience in managing paediatric respiratory patients in the hospital / community setting
  • Demonstrates skilled written and verbal communication skills
  • Presentation skills Keyboard and word processing skills
Desirable criteria
