Job overview

The Portering Department at the West Suffolk Hospital is looking to recruit  a General Porter working 37.5 hours per week.

At the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Porters are essential members of staff.

Moving patients and equipment is just part of our job.

We liaise with other teams, helping with whatever way possible with the aim to provide the best possible service to the patient.

Main duties of the job

General Porters are required to assist with day-to-day duties that are necessary for the smooth running of the Department. These duties include but are not limited to:

- Transportation of patients to and from wards and departments
- Delivery and collection of essential items within the hospital grounds, which will require interpersonal skills and the ability to carry out manual handling tasks.
- Working with a variety of people including staff at all levels, patients and visitors.

Applicants must have good customer service and communication skills coupled with a professional appearance which is appropriate to a front of house role.

Full training and a health assessment will be required before becoming a team member.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job summary:

 

The post will form part of a team of Porters producing general Portering services at Newmarket to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

 

 

Deployment:

 

The post holder would normally be designated to the Newmarket Hospital Portering Service but must be prepared to carry out other duties, as their role develops within the Facilities Directorate.  Deployment would be commensurate with appropriate training.

 

 

Skills:

 

  1. Interpersonal skills i.e., making good contact with people and establishing effective working relationships with all wards and departments.

 

  1. Ability to perform manual tasks i.e. tug driving, changing cylinders, the movement of cylinders, the movement of beds and wheelchairs.

 

 

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assisting in the general collection and delivering service for all wards and departments.

 

  • The collection of food trolleys from the kitchen and delivery to the wards.

 

  • The collection of food trolleys from the wards for delivery to the kitchen wash-up area.

 

  • The collection and transportation of waste (non - clinical) from all wards and departments to the waste holding area

 

  • The collection of dirty laundry from all wards and departments to the dirty linen area

 

  • Delivery of clean linen on Tuesday and Thursday, checking of stock levels on the wards.

 

  • To assist with the routine collection from the Stores area and delivery to the appropriate ward or area. Wednesday and Friday.

 

  • The collection and delivery of any other equipment, including medical gas cylinders, as and when required.

 

  • The collection and replacement of Sharp Smart containers to all wards and departments and maintaining the Sharps Smart area in a neat and tidy fashion.

 

  • The collection of clinical waste from all wards and departments to the waste area.

 

  • Unlocking and locking of medical records
  • Email daily usage of Oxygen to the Portering Supervisor at WSH.

 

  • Fire Marshall, carrying red Bleep.

 

  • Responsible for checking CCTV in the event of an incident, Liaison with Police.

 

  • Window/Buildings check of outside buildings in the evening.

 

  1. The transportation of patients to and from wards to X-Ray.

 

  1. Assisting with the control of traffic and car parking within the Hospital grounds when required, i.e. Major Incident, CBRN, Missing Patients and other emergency situations.

 

  1. Assisting with on-the-job training to new members of staff.

 

  1. The post holder is required to assist when Major Incidents are declared and are required to confirm to West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s policy on major incidents and to attend related training sessions as requested.

 

  1. Any other reasonable duties as requested by Rosemary Ward/Facilities Manager.

 

  1. Security (aggression) to contain situation liaise with police if required, and report using the Datix process

 

  1. In the event of an emergency make safe contact WSH Estates liaise with engineer on arrival.

 

 

  1. Gritting of paths and areas in the Winter months.

 

 

General Requirements:

 

  • To carry out any other Portering duties when asked by the Portering and Security Manager and/or Portering Supervisor. This includes duties in any part of the Hospital and ad hoc request from other Health Service Units, Rosemary Ward under the control of the Executive Chief Operating Officer.

 

  • To be familiar with Trust and Departmental Policies and to conform to these as they relate to the Portering Service.

 

  • To report untoward occurrences that affects the operational efficiency of the Portering Service to the Portering Service Management.

 

  • The ability to co-operate and work with colleagues of all grades is essential.

 

  • Health and Safety Training, radio Communication and the use of Electric Vehicles will be given at induction. The post holder will be required to operate such vehicles in accordance with Trust Policies.

 

  • Other general duties within the level of competency for this post.

Person specification

Education & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications to demonstrate a good standard of general education
  • Basic skills in literacy and numeracy.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Portering; or willing to work towards

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of providing high quality customer service.
  • Proven ability to work without supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Portering experience.
  • Previous experience of working in a hospital environment.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Able to work using own initiative
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to drive tugs, move laundry bags and carry out all other manual handling tasks as required
  • Good attention to detail

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Flexible approach to working hours with the ability to work an alternating shift pattern.
  • Able to become part of the RPI team following training and mandatory health assessment.
  • Evidence of good attendance and timekeeping
