Cancer Support and Information Assistant

Job overview

The post holder will provide a meet and greet service in the Cancer Support and Information Centres for individual patients, carers, relatives and professionals to support access to high quality information and support in relation to cancer across the two Hospital sites, County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke on Trent and will be expected to work regularly at both of these. This  will include triage of individual patient needs, provision of verbal and written information, supportive listening and signposting to available services. 

Training, support and supervision is integral to this post and it is important that the post holder shows an ability to identify their own learning and development needs and a willingness to undertake further study, both formal and informal in order to address those needs.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract and is a secondment opportunity for internal candidates and/or for candidates employed elsewhere in the NHS

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have face to face contact with people requiring guidance and support for their information needs. This may be cancer specific information or for example sign posting to services to guide them regarding financial or emotional support. They will be responsible for providing administrative support and maintaining a specialist resource of up-to-date and accurate information for display within the Macmillan Cancer Support & Information Service (MCSIS) and wards/departments across the Trust.  This role will also involve researching new information and local services to support the needs of those affected by cancer and maintaining a signposting directory.

The post holder will be required to co-ordinate, liaise with, and mentor volunteers and newly-recruited staff under the guidance of the Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Service Manager.
