Are you a newly qualified Speech and Language Therapist that is enthusiastic about addressing health inequalities for adults with mental health disorders, autistic people and/or learning disabilities? If so, this job may be perfect for you!

Having great communication skills and the adaptability to use different strategies to tailor care around an individual’s needs is essential in this role. You will be working alongside a Band 7 SLT and a full multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, health care assistants, psychologists, occupational therapists, health care support workers and social workers. This is an exciting opportunity to have a core role in embedding Speech and Language Therapy across Forensic Mental Health services.

·       You will be responsible for providing the Speech and Language Therapy assessment and interventions for the service.

·       You will use best practice to inform your practice and where appropriate standardised assessment tools and outcome measures.

·       You will work with a full time Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist

·       You will be part of an active AHP team in the forensic directorate made up of Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapist and Dietetics and will have this network of experience and support to draw on.

·       To take responsibility for a clinical caseload, to be an autonomous practitioner within the team with access to clinical supervision on a regular basis.

·       To carry out assessments including gathering complex information from clients, carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. This may include the use of specialist standardised and non-standardised assessment tools, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and observation of the client and their environment. It may also involve carrying out assessments jointly with other professionals.

·       To contribute to the overall care plan using effective Speech and Language Therapy approaches and negotiate and communicate these with the client, family, carers, and other members of the treatment team.

·       To embed an inclusive communication approach across the service through communication training and creating accessible information

·       To use a coproduction approach to support service user autonomy and help them to have a voice in their care.

·       To contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings/care and treatment planning contributing the specialist Speech and Language Therapy perspective.

·       To participate in managerial supervision to maintain best practice.

Qualifications and Training

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent. Registration with HCPC
  • All newly qualified clinical/social work staff are required to complete their preceptorship/ASYE during the first 12 months of employment
  • Evidence of/willing to undertake post-registration training relevant to the post. A commitment to supporting mentorship /pre-registration training for students

  • Post Graduate qualification in dysphagia
  • Evidence of completing specialist short courses

Experience

  • Relevant experience/placements to the role including assessment and management of communication disorders and dysphagia
  • Ability to manage time and caseload effectively
