Job overview

This job is based at County Hospital and will be expected to rotate between the sites in the future, covering similar sized ward. The General Medicine ward  is 28 bedded ward

The appointed person will be actively involved in helping to provide clinical leadership and  support  to the ward. And also participate in GIM on-call  for unselected medical admissions on a pro-rota basis.

Main duties of the job

Each ward has a daily board round followed by a morning consultant ward round and the consultant is currently allocated further time on wards for the afternoons to meet relatives, MDTs or review newly admitted patients in the afternoon as required.

You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

Subject to the conditions of the Terms and Conditions of Service you are expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust. You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provision of cover to your base ward, attendance at daily board rounds and weekly case conferences, as required, on your base ward.
  • Provide cover for an agreed complement of wards for a specialist opinion on patients. In addition, to contribute to General Medicine admissions by participating in the on-call consultant rota for Medicine (as per job plan).
  • Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.
  • Participate in the development of the protocols and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Take an appropriate share of responsibility for the professional supervision and development of junior doctors within the speciality, to include appraisal.
  • Provide ward based teaching to junior doctors, medical students and physician associates.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date. This will involve taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Appraisal process and revalidation

Qualfications

Essential criteria
  • • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine via one of the following: a) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • MRCP (UK) or an equivalent Qualification
Desirable criteria
  • MD PhD or equivalent
  • Specialty Certificate Examination

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in General Medicine
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within both specialties.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher training in a dedicated specialty training scheme

Professional & Multidisciplinary Team Working

Essential criteria
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance process
  • Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines
  • Ability to organise, and manage outpatient priorities, waiting times / lists
  • Ability to manage and lead clinical team. Competent in basic information technology
  • Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors
Desirable criteria
  • Further skills in information technology

Academic Achievements, Research, Publications

Essential criteria
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit.
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making.
  • Ability to understand and apply re-search methodology

  • To have published in peer reviewed journals.
