Job overview

We are recruiting for a Staff Nurses to be a member of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the leadership of the newly developed Eating Disorder Day Patient Service based at St George’s Hospital, Stafford.

The post holder will be responsible for supervising staff members; booking clinics and overseeing the delivery of the programme.  Further duties include, undertaking rehabilitation activities for this patient group.

Interventions which will also include therapeutic, social support activities, psycho educational groups, food related rehabilitation tasks, relapse prevention; physical health monitoring and risk management.

Main duties of the job

This post will provide the opportunity to engage in individual and group work carried out in the day patient unit and in appropriate community settings under the direction of the Occupational Therapy, Clinical Lead and Operational Lead.

The post holder will deliver an occupational therapy programme set up by the Occupational Therapist and Eating Disorders Day Patient Team and will be expected to implement, evaluate, prioritise, and contribute to this programme under supervision and will be expected to liaise closely with the qualified nurse therapists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To work as part of a team providing an Occupational Therapy service for patients referred to the Eating Disorders Day Patient Programme. This will involve implementing and modifying interventions related to areas of psycho-education, leisure, communication, independent living, educational and work skills.

• To use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills and observation and evaluation of the patient’s progress.

• To be part of a patient centered service where the needs of the individual will determine the types of intervention. This will mean that the post holder will work across a variety of therapeutic activities, psycho education groups, shopping, meals / snacks out, cooking; portioning; relaxation etc. (this is not an exclusive list).

• To support patients to practice their skills and re gain their confidence and independence which may be done in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team.  

• To implement treatment programmes according to individual needs and in conjunction with qualified staff to implement the discharge process.  This will entail the use of encouragement, motivation, negotiation, reassurance and training skills as well as discussing with patients / carers their progress, as appropriate.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse on NMC Register.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of formulating assessments, planning, co-ordinating and supporting people within a hospital setting.
  • Experience of providing care and interventions within mental health settings.
Desirable criteria
  • Has experience of working with Eating Disorders.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate working knowledge /understanding of evidence based practice.
  • Willingness to undertake further training.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of current thinking and guidance in the management of eating disorders.
  • Ability to effectively formulate risk management plans and to evaluate regularly.
Desirable criteria
  • Commitment of working within the specialist field of Eating Disorders.
  • Flexible approach to meeting the needs of the service.
