An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Specialist Low Secure Forensic Service on Yew ward. The Yew ward is a low secure 12 bedded male acute unit based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated and innovative individual, who can organise and facilitate activities and groups on the ward.

Your role will aim to increase engagement, reduce boredom and promote therapeutic activity which has a positive impact on the health and well-being for our service users on Yew ward. Some tasks will include: 1 to 1 working with service users, to support them to build their skills of daily living such as: self catering and self care. Another focus of this role will involve facilitating ward base groups to provide entertainment and enjoyment.

The post holder will be ward based and support the nursing and Occupational therapy team with safe running of the ward and ensuring patient centred care at all times. The post holder will have opportunity to plan their day, create and implement new ideas and groups and contribute to the wider MDT. This role requires the post holder to be able to document in a accurate and timely fashion. 

Due to the nature of forensic mental health working, the post holder will be offered both managerial and clinical supervision and regular support from the team. 

This is an opportunity for the post holder to work within a specialist team including a variety of disciplines with a wide range of knowledge and expertise.

You will be working a seven day a week rota between the hours of 07:45 and 20:00 and provide patient centred, recovery based activities with the aim of supporting discharge.

·       Supporting the nursing and OT team to safely run the ward.

·       Facilitate ward based groups and activities on and off the ward.

·       Facilitate 1 to 1 sessions and build a rapport with our service users.

·       Support the planning of annual events e.g. Christmas, Easter.

·       Input into daily community meetings.

·       Involvement in both staff meetings and workers meetings.

·       Support service users to build on their skills and promote quality of life.

·       Support of delivering initiatives such as Safewards and recovery college.

·       Support service users to build links with local community.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

  • GCSE Maths & English Or NVQ in HealthCare with demonstrable evidence of numeracy and literacy skills (equivalent GCSE’s or Functional Skills) Or equivalent i.e Health and social care qualification at least equivalent to the above that equips the person with the necessary knowledge, skill and competence as outlined below

Experience

  • Experience of working with people with mental health needs as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of integrating care delivery across multi-disciplinary / multi-agency teams

  • Knowledge and awareness of issues relating to mental health, access to mental health services, and mental health promotion.

  • Knowledge of other relevant local and national documents/drivers that effect practice
