Job overview

Paediatric Gastroenterology and General Paediatrics

Provision together with clinical colleagues of a comprehensive paediatric gastroenterology service. This will include participation in the general paediatric tier 2 rota, Diagnosis, assessment and management of common paediatric gastroenterology problems including constipation, IBD, eating disorders, gastro-oesophageal reflux and eosinophilic esophagitis. The post holder will be expected to have or to develop a special interest in paediatric gastroenterology.

Main duties of the job

You will be encouraged to work with colleagues to manage the daily business of the Directorate and to develop the service in accordance with the Trust’s strategic direction and take part in meetings and other activities as agreed with the Clinical Director. 

You are responsible for you own health and safety in that you must comply with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures, which are in place.  In addition, you have a duty to any other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately. 

You are expected to work within the policies and procedures, standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust. 

Programmed activities (based on a whole time post)

 Full time/job share 9.996 PAs including 2 PA for Supporting Professional Activity (SPA).

The content of these activities are subject to negotiation and agreement within the Directorate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • BLS/PLS/PiLS Trained
  • APLS or PALS provider
Desirable criteria
  • A post-graduated qualification e.g MRCPCH, MSc, DCH, DCCH, MBA or other equivalent diplomas

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 4 years (or equivalent) postgraduate training, two of which must have been in paediatrics and 1 year of experience within paediatric gastroenterology
  • Ability to assess and treat the sick child
  • Ability to perform practical procedures used in general, paediatrics including venepuncture, cannulation, lumbar puncture, long line insertion
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in paediatric endoscopy
  • Experience of managing patients in paediatric gastroenterology outpatients
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of managing acutely ill children
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively e.g. report writing; thesis

Academic Achievements, Research, Publications

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to take part in teaching Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills Commitment to continuing medical education
  • Participation in research or clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Demonstrated ability or experience in teaching e.g. SHO’s, medical students
  • Formal training in research or teaching methods
  • Conducting audit and research

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience and understanding of clinical audit
  • Understanding of management issues including medical discipline; clinical governance, service planning
  • Willingness to participate in service developments
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to manage e.g. project work; mentoring junior staff
