Senior Pharmacy Technician

Job overview

This role will initially be a band 4 development post for 18 months until set competency’s are complete, this will then lead to a band 5 role. If you have the required level of experience which will be discussed at interview the role will be band 5.  Our Pharmacy is a friendly, progressive department. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and progressive Pharmacy Technician to join our department. 

Based at Bassetlaw District General Hospital, this  post will provide the successful applicant with experience in in-patient dispensing using  automated machines, aseptic dispensing skills and ward based medicine optimisation experience. 

You will have a BTEC level 3 Pharmaceutical Science  alongside NVQ level 3 Pharmaceutical Skills qualification or equivalent and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Post qualification experience is desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

Professional Duties:

·   To ensure that appropriate professional standards and local policies and procedures are complied with.

·  To assist in the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.

·  Participates in the development and maintenance of a high quality Pharmacy Service to the Trust and its external customers.

· To undertake personal development and continuing education and training as necessary to ensure a high level of competency in carrying out the functions of this post and maintaining registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Main Duties

· To undertake personal development and continuing education and training as necessary to ensure a high level of competency in carrying out the functions of this post and maintaining registration with the GPhC

· To assist in the induction, training and direction of Pre-registration Trainees and new members of staff.

· To assist at ward level in the monitoring, ordering and supply of medicines to the wards

· To undertake Medicines Reconciliation on admission.

· To dispense Controlled Drugs for both ward stocks and prescriptions and to perform accuracy checks on the dispensing of controlled drugs 

·  To be responsible for the maintenance of accurate registers and stock levels of Controlled Drugs.

·  To participate in the retrieval of blood results and co-ordinate the supply of psychotropic medication requiring specialised monitoring (e.g. Clozapine)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • 5 GCSE’s at C or above to include Maths, English and Science Computer Literacy
  • NVQ 3 in Pharmaceutical Skills or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Accrediated checking technician
  • Management /Leadership qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven pharmacy experience.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Previous experience of training/supervision of other staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy experience
  • Experience of ward based pharmacy services.

Organisational Skills

Essential criteria
  • Recognises personal limitations, able to identify when advice needs to be sought.
  • Flexible/adaptable – shift work
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Medicines optimisation and the Trust’s Medicines Optimisation Strategy
