Job overview

We are looking to appoint to a Whole-Time Consultant Physician with An Interest in Clinical Cerebrovasular Disease to work within the directorate of Neurosciences supporting Stroke Service on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Stroke Service is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers. 

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Appointments are made to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the person appointed is required to be sufficiently flexible to undertake their main clinical duties at any of the sites within the Region and/or to change their base hospital and change any aspect of their job plans to comply with trust priorities and Neuroscience capacity plans. 

The appointee, together with consultant colleagues, will be expected to actively participate in the management of acute neurological admissions and in-patients including the management of acute stroke referrals and in-patients as part of routine weekday and all out of hours periods.

The person appointed will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence. He/she will  have continuing responsibility for patients in his/her care and the proper functioning of the Department.

The person appointed will be expected to participate in the HASU on call weekend rota. 

 A specimen weekly timetable has been drawn up showing the expected distribution of time in the job plan. This timetable may be subject to change in consultation with the appointee.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. You will also have completed Specialist Training (or equivalent) in Neurology  or General Internal Medicine and be entered on the Specialist Register of the GMC, or have a CCT date within six months of the date of interview. Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practice.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Internal Medicine or Neurology or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • Further qualifications in research methods, teaching and/or management
  • Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships
  • Stroke Fellowship

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Experience of teaching/training other clinical professionals

Management and Administration

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management
  • Evidence of ability to work with management and previous experience of management groups.
  • Able to prioritise & organise work efficiently

  • Awareness of current issues in NHS
