Are you  a transformational dynamic nurse leader, who is seeking opportunities to further their nursing career within acute oncology care?

Weston Park Cancer Centre (WPCC) is  a specialist centre that provides cancer treatment and care to patients across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, Integrated Care System and is looking for an enthusiastic, responsive and adaptable  nurse to join the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Acute Oncology Service. 

The post holder will be an integral and visible member of the MDT and provide clinical leadership, advice and support to all colleagues  enabling appropriate, evidenced based treatments in line with both local and national policies.

The expectations of this post will be met through professional leadership, consultancy, education and training, research, audit and evaluation, practice and service development, with an expectation that they will contribute 60% time to clinical practice.

You will need to demonstrate excellent leadership, management and communication skills. You must also demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, have a proven research portfolio, be self-motivated, but also work as part of a team. Candidates must also show commitment to their continued professional development and be able to demonstrate that they are able to deliver across the four pillars of practice, enabling and supporting the development of others.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will practice at an advanced clinical level and exercise high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in the clinical care. 

 Working as an independent practitioner within acute oncology, the role will provide clinical leadership, expert practice and advanced knowledge, integrating research evidence into practice and contributing to/leading on research in acute cancer care and treatment.

The post holder will monitor and improve standards of care, implemented through supervision of practice, clinical audit, identifying research questions, disseminating research findings and promoting their translation into practice. The role will also play an active role in teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership. The post holder will contribute to clinical effectiveness across the Trust by participating in audit and research .

The  post holder will work closely with the  Clinician Director and Nurse Director to ensure that the Trust is at the forefront of evidence based practice.

The post holder will also be involved with, and where appropriate collaborate and represent the trust in national and international research contributing to relevant networks and forums, with the aim of supporting the development of a centre of excellence in the practice of specialised cancer care.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Post registration qualification/ education relevant to Acute Oncology
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field/or equivalent/higher post graduate qualification
  • Recognised Management/leadership qualification or programme
  • To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
  • Non- Medical Prescriber qualification (NMP)
  • (APACS)- Advanced Physical Assessment and Consultation Skills, required for autonomous practitioner
Desirable criteria
  • Aim of working towards doctorate qualification
  • Willingness to undertake PhD/ Doctorate qualification

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advance clinical reasoning skills
  • Ability to develop effective relationships internally and externally
  • Ability to work strategically with advanced decision making skills to deal with a complex case load
  • Understanding of the Acute Oncology service within the wider ICB
  • Knowledge of quality, standard setting, benchmarking and audit alongside a working knowledge of clinical governance and its implications
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes
  • Evidence of applying national policy locally and involvement in strategic initiatives
  • Ability to deal with complex and challenging emotional and potentially ethically sensitive situations
  • Emotionally resilient, ability to deal with conflict

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post registration experience in the field of specialised cancer services, which includes extensive experience in Acute Oncology
  • Successful completion of core and relevant specialist competencies and relevant portfolio.
  • Substantial leadership experience at Grade Band 7 or above or equivalent in Acute Oncology
  • Evidence of service improvement
  • Evidence of participation in research, audit and service evaluation
  • Evidence of workforce/ practice development and teaching
  • Experience of delivering education at a local and national level
  • Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely
  • Evidence of a commitment to Evidence Based Practice.
  • SACT competent and familiar with SACT prescribing system (Chemocare)

  • Experience of managing change through working with others
  • Experience of working with HEIs
  • Management Experience/ Qualification
  • Experience of grant writing and income generation
