The Acute Medicine Department works within the Acute and Emergency Medicine Directorate, along side the Emergency Medicine and Pharmacy Departments.

The Acute Medicine Department covers the Acute Medicine Unit (a 56-bedded unit) and the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) located nearby AMU and the Emergency Department, involving over 25,000 admissions per year. The AMU team assess and manage an evolving acute take (becoming more undifferentiated), typically providing care to patients within the first 48-hours of their attendance, aiming to turnaround and discharge patients safely or triage and admit to an appropriate inpatient team for further treatment.
