Clinical Nurse Specialist - Urology

 An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced paediatric nurse to join the urology nursing team. Urology is a very busy team, providing care for local and regional patients.

This is a varied post working alongside a large multidisciplinary team within the trust including medical staff, nursing staff, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The post holder will be expected to care for a variety of patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting, who require urological input such as, dressing removals, catheterisation training and catheter care, as well as the supervision and competency training of staff within the trust. The post holder will also be expected to provide specialist training for schools and families on urological cares such as, catheterisation and the care of supra pubic catheters/ureterostomies. 


The role requires you to carry out nurse led continence clinics. You need to have a good understanding evidence-based care of urological conditions and procedures and the ability to plan and implement complex care packages for some patients such as, spinal cord injuries. The role will also require the post holder to perform diagnostic testing such as, non-invasive bladder scanning.


The successful applicant should be keen to expand their knowledge and enjoy a challenge; however comprehensive training will be given in all aspects of urology care, alongside the established urology and continence team.

•    To work within the urology/ continence team under the management and leadership of the consultants and the band 7 specialist nurses.

  •  To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for urology and continence patients considering individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
    •    Co-ordinate and provide holistic, high quality, clinically effective care to patients and families on the wards, clinic and community settings in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct
    •    To provide information, education and advice within clinical speciality, for patients, families and other professionals 
    •    Act as an advocate for patients
    •    To act as an independent prescriber in areas of competency

•    Communicate and liaise with multidisciplinary teams in both the hospital and community settings and with other agencies such as education, social services and voluntary agencies to promote a seamless service.
•    Communicate effectively and sensitively taking account of the highly complex and sensitive nature of continence problems, issues of non-compliance/ barriers to communication and potential child protection issues
•     Provide  support, advice and counselling for children with continence problems, their parents and families
•    Work closely with professionals in primary and secondary care to plan discharge and ensure high standards across the continuum.
