Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

This is an exciting time to join RDASH and in particular the Doncaster Care Group as one of the Consultant Psychiatrists  serving the older people's mental health services. You will be working closely with  community mental health teams, an experienced nurse consultant, specialty doctor and multi - disciplinary team. You will have the opportunity to case manage your own functional inpatients.

Following a recent re – structure of the older people’s services in Doncaster, there are now two main localities, each combining two sub-localities, served by a community mental health team (CMHT). These are North – East (NE), and South – Central (SC).  The post holder will serve one of the sub-localities ie North/East/South or Central.

The caseload numbers for the localities are very similar (May 2024).

South 385; North 372; Central 233; East 386.

Each of the two main localities (NE and SC) are also served by a Nurse Consultant, a full - time specialty doctor, as well as a full multi – disciplinary team. The older adult CMHTs liaise regularly and closely with the one, 20 - bedded, inpatient unit (Windermere) located on Tickhill Road Site, to ensure safe flow of all patients into and from the unit. The inpatient unit also has a dedicated nurse consultant for all organic inpatients, and a full MDT, including psychology input.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder will be expected to support the multi-professional teams to determine need and deliver care across the range of community and care settings served by the mental health teams.
  • To work closely with the Community Mental Health Teams to provide a psychiatric service to the patients who require psychiatric care from the catchment population. The post holder will have continued responsibility for the care of the patients in his or her charge and the proper functioning of their team. This includes the administrative duties associated with the care of the patient and the running of their clinical team.
  • The post holder is expected to work in both organic and functional aspects of mental health services for older adults. The post holder will case manage their own, functional inpatients.
  • To provide medical leadership, consultation, advice, and guidance within the Community Mental Health Teams, ensuring that care and treatment are safe and effective, efficient and within national guidelines.
  • To provide medical assessment, diagnosis, and formulation to appropriate patients. On completion of assessment, advise on diagnosis and treatment within the teams and to external service providers.
  • To provide medical care to patients with severe mental health problems requiring enhanced care coordination..
