Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a locum Consultant Urologist to join the Somerset Urology Service. We are looking for a consultant with core urological skills to help support and deliver our service. The Somerset Urology department is based across 2 acute hospital sites. The majority of clinical commitments will be at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton with the potential to cover elective clinical sessions at Yeovil District Hospital. The on-call commitment will be a 1 in 11 rota covering both hospitals. Most of the on call is managed from Taunton. The post will attract 10PAs.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to join friendly, enthusiastic and forward thinking Urology professionals who are supported by high quality colleagues from a full spectrum of allied specialities.  The appointee would join the Somerset Urology team in delivering a modern, high quality urology service which is responsive to patients, and through an integrated service at primary care level will improve health outcomes.

You must be registered with the GMC on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of gaining entry onto), willing to participate as part of the Somerset on-call rota and be involved in Teaching and Clinical Governance provision.

If you share this vision and are able to work collaboratively, this is an ideal opportunity to be at the forefront of change.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will include Theatre sessions, outpatient clinics to include routine, urgent and new cancer referrals, MDT meetings, SPA and clinical admin. As the integrated Somerset Urology Service continues to develop there will be sessions for Consultants at Taunton and Yeovil depending on expertise/special interests.

All Consultants are allocated 1.5 SPAs of core activity and any other roles eg Audit lead, Cancer Lead, Clinical Lead, Educational Supervisor, Research Activity, will be allocated as extra SPA time as appropriate.

The Urology department will operate according to an 11 week rolling timetable, which for each Consultant will include 10 weeks of elective activity and one daytime on-call week (‘hot week’).

Overnight and weekend on call are covered on a 1 in 11 rolling rota. Most of the out of hours on call will be at Taunton with Yeovil operating as a 5 day service.

Working for our organisation

As an organisation, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust offers employees a wide range of benefits including flexible working, NHS pension scheme, generous annual leave allowance and a commitment to career  development.

You will be eligible for our Blue Light Card and a wide range of NHS exclusive shopping & leisure discounts.

We are proud of our skilled, diverse workforce and as an inclusive employer we welcome applications from all backgrounds.

Working in Somerset enables you to enjoy the idyllic countryside, areas of outstanding beauty and stunning coastlines whilst still only being a stone’s throw away from bustling city centres like Bristol, Bath and Exeter and only two hours away from London.
