Consultant Haematology

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Our award winning trusts recognise that our colleagues are our most valuable resource, we are proud of the excellent levels of service our Trust provides to our service users and the dedication and conscientiousness of our colleagues. With over 10,000 colleagues working for our trusts in a very wide range of services, we aim to provide a supportive, inclusive environment in which our colleagues can thrive.

Job overview

We are seeking a full-time Consultant Haematologist (10PA) based at Musgrove Park Hospital within the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post for a retired colleague. The post is primarily based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton but all Consultants contribute to a County wide service that includes visiting sessions and on call commitments at Yeovil District Hospital. The post-holder will share clinical and laboratory duties with seven other consultant colleagues and will work within our team of seven Haematology Specialist Nurses, two SAS doctors, two Specialist Registrars, one IMT doctor and one Clinical Fellow. The appointees will be core members of the pan-Somerset Haematology multidisciplinary team. There is flexibility within our existing team to welcome applicants with either a malignant or haemostasis/thrombosis subspecialty interest and also for individuals to develop subspecialty interests with these roles.

Although this is a full time post, we would be happy to discuss the option of working less than full time on an individual basis.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, together with the other consultants.

The appointee will provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring Haematology Services. The appointee will be expected to develop sub-speciality interest to guide high-quality, innovative patient care, and to provide leadership. They will contribute mainly to one or two sub-speciality “teams” – myeloid, myeloma, lymphoma, and general/haemostasis.

The consultants operate an “attending” system, whereby the inpatient care, emergency referrals, triage of GP referrals and on-call are conducted together on a 1 in 8 rota. During this busy week, the consultant is not expected to have out-patient clinics.

Blood film and bone marrow reporting is a part of all the consultant roles. An Advice and Guidance platform is available for non-emergency GP queries, and all consultants contribute to the running of this service.

The appointee will take on departmental leadership roles by agreement, in rotation with other Consultant colleagues, including Clinical Service Lead, Laboratory Lead, Blood Transfusion Lead, JACIE Programme Director, MDT Lead, Education Lead, M&M Lead and Audit lead.

Working for our organisation

Somerset Foundation Trust and Yeovil District Hospital have merged as of April 2023.
