You will be one of the following: a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Learning Disability Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Social Worker trained in Mental Health.

LaDS is an all age, all vulnerability service working in Police Custody Suites and Courts in the Wiltshire area.  We are an assessment service who work closely with the Police and other CJS professionals to ensure the most effective pathway is for people in custody who may be vulnerable, or suffering mental health problems.

We work with service users with a range of vulnerabilities and you will need to be able to confidently assess various needs in potentially difficult circumstances. You must be able to work with individuals experiencing mental health crisis, learning disabilities, drug and alcohol misuse, and extreme emotional distress.

 

Main duties of the job

The aim of this role is to facilitate the following:

  • Improved communication as a result of partnership working
  • Improved police confidence in dealing with persons suffering with mental health issues
  • Faster response to deal with those suffering from mental health problems
  • Improved information sharing between agencies
  • Improved patient outcomes and experience
  • Improved working relationships between Police and Health Services
  • Direct access to Mental Health Services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Result Areas
To attend Court and provide mental health assessments, advice and 
identify robust care pathways, for individuals where a potential mental health need has been identified.

To provide the Court with written information pertaining to the individual in a timely fashion to inform disposal of the case. 

Prepare comprehensive health and social circumstances reports where indicated in a specified time frame. 

To work closely and build links with all referring agencies within the Court acting as a single point of contact for Health.

To address the Court in person when necessary in order to advise the 
Court in the disposal, and care pathway of a particular case.

To refer to appropriate services for the identified needs of the service user.

To make recommendation to Court, whether criminal justice system 
remains involved or diversion is indicated.

To build a good working knowledge of the Mental Health Act in relation to the Courts and the criminal justice system.

Where diversion is indicated, to facilitate Mental Health Act assessments at the Court in conjunction with the AWP Assessment teams.

To refer to the prison mental health teams where custody is indicated 
ensuring appropriate information is received along the care pathway.

To provide specialist advice and service to Probation and the custody 
suites where indicated. 

To provide mental health information to Probation in the formulation of their pre-sentence reports, where a potential mental health need has been identified.

To be responsible for adhering to all Trust Policies and procedures.

To be able to communicate clearly with a diverse group of service users.

To work autonomously, with the ability to organise and manage own time according to delegated workload. Take accountability for own professional practice.

To possess a good working knowledge of the Integrated Care Programme Approach (ICPA), including the ability to formulate a risk assessment and risk management plan.

To provide formal and informal clinical supervision to junior staff, students, mental health workers where appropriate/in agreement with the team manager. 

To facilitate the efficient operation of the team, including the provision of cover for the role of Team Manager in their absence as required.

To be able to communicate clearly with a diverse group of service users.

Person specification

Personal Statement

Essential criteria
  • Identifies a rationale/interest for wishing to work the custody/court setting
  • Ability to travel a wide geographical area with limited access to public transport.
  • Self awareness and emotional resilience when faced with difficult and demanding situations.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered as a mental health practitioner with professional qualifications in a relevant field
  • current registration with NMC or HCPC without restriction
  • Experience of working with individuals with complex and diverse needs including enduring mental health needs and dual diagnosis

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-qualifying clinical experience obtained in a variety of settings
  • Demonstrates significant experience in the assessment and risk management of complex cases.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within the criminal justice system

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing own caseload and ability to priorities within that.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to carry out assessments requiring intense and prolonged concentration in stressful situations

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to articulate an advanced and detailed understanding of relevant legal frameworks
  • Demonstrates a clear knowledge and understanding of the issues and Statutory processes
