We want an exceptional person to lead our vision to deliver excellence for people with a learning disability and autistic people in our innovative specialist acute inpatient mental health service and outreach team in the South West region, as part of NHSE SW and the region’s wider transformation of the end to end pathway, to support people to live their best lives in their local communities.
AWP’s coproduced designed unit will begin accepting admissions in autumn 2025 when the post holder will be expected to combine direct patient care and provide clinical leadership to the unit and outreach service. Until then AWP Specialised Services Division invites you to be influential in leading the development and delivery of the clinical model in partnership with people with lived experience.
The post holder will be supported by a large, well skilled, multi-disciplinary team to work together to become a centre of excellence and provide outstanding care.
Main duties of the job
The consultant will deliver direct interventions to service users at a level of intensity according to their need.
This will include the provision of psychiatric assessments, diagnostic formulation and the establishment of a treatment plan to address their mental and (if appropriate) physical health needs.
The consultant will also work collaboratively with the unit’s extensive multi-disciplinary team, engaging in both formal and ad hoc meetings relating to patient care and the efficient running of the unit and outreach team.
Last, but not least, the consultant will collaborate with colleagues within the trust, as well as colleagues in primary care, secondary care, third sector, and social care wherever this would be required.
The consultant will share the Responsible Clinician role for the unit’s inpatients with the unit’s MPAC.
The Consultant will also have a clinical supervisory role.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
- MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Eligibility
Essential criteria
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
- Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
- CCT in Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of assessing and treating LD patients in an inpatient and community setting.
Personal Skills
Essential criteria
- To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
- Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in adults with intellectual disability and/or autism.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.
- Knowledge of current government policies in Learning Disabilities.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
- Understand principles of teaching.
Research and Audit
Essential criteria
- Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
- Experience of carrying out an audit project.
Management
Essential criteria
- Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
Other
Essential criteria
- Independently mobile and willing to travel

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
