Clinical Scientist Vascular

Job overview

The Vascular Studies Unit provides routine and emergency clinical services to a number of Vascular Consultants within the Bath, Bristol and Weston Vascular Network alongside a range of other physicians, including those in emergency medicine, diabetes, stroke, cardiology and Primary Care to diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial and venous disease using ultrasound and other non-invasive techniques.

The unit currently consists of, 3.4 clinical vascular scientists and 1 trainee vascular scientists, 1 vascular nurse, 2 HCAs, 1 vascular secretary and 1.4 unit administrators.

The staff within the service are involved in the day to day running of the Vascular Unit and clinical assessment of patients referred from all specialities and are required to perform accurate and detailed assessments and a broad range of clinical investigations in line with departmental and network agreed protocols. One stop clinics are provided for the Vascular Surgery Clinics that are held within the Vascular Unit and for Stroke, TIA, and rheumatology patients.

Bath is a regional centre for specialist rheumatology care at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases. Radiofrequency Ablation for the treatment of varicose veins is regularly delivered in the Vascular Unit alongside the vascular nurses and Vascular Surgeon.

The successful candidate will be accredited or will be working towards accreditation with the Society of Vascular Technology of Great Britain and Ireland and/or be HCPC registered. 

Main duties of the job

  • Clinically assess patients to determine the most appropriate diagnostic test to perform, taking into account likely treatment options.
  • Autonomously perform a wide range of colour Duplex ultrasound examinations for peripheral vascular disease and communicate teh findings in a succinct report
  • Deal with certain issues in a sensitive nature when breaking bad news such as graft occlusion
  • Recognise conditions that require urgent medical attention and liaise with the necessary medical/surgical staff 
  • Ensure a safe working environment is maintained 

 

Non Clinical

 

  • Prioritise referrals and work in the unit in accordance with unit, Trust and network priorities
  • Work together with other staff to provide an efficient service within the unit and network
  • Participate in clinical governance/ audit within the unit to ensure best practice is maintained
  • Participate in the development of working guidelines and protocols within the unit and across the network. 
  • Participate in research activity within the Vascular Studies Unit and across the network 
  • Teach vascular ultrasound scanning to Trainee Vascular Scientists within the unit
  • Supervise the clinical work of Trainee Vascular Scientists and take responsibility for content of scan reports produced.
  • Maintain professional accreditation/registration through the Society of Vascular Technology of Great Britain and Ireland/ HCPC.
  • Enrol in CPD programme and attend seminars and courses to ensure continuing personal development is maintained

  • Post graduate qualification in vascular ultrasound
