Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Adult Therapies at the RUH for a permanent B8a SLT Dysphagia Lead to provide clinical and operational leadership for our Adult SLT team.

The successful candidate will have advanced dysphagia skills in specialist areas, such as tracheostomy care, and highly developed leadership skills.  

The SLT team provide care to inpatients across the acute hospital, and also provide outpatient services in Voice and Head and Neck Cancer.  The inpatient services include specialty areas such as Stroke, Neurology and ITU.

We have an established SLT-Led VFS service and use CRT for stroke patients as standard.  We have recently developed a new FEES service to complement both of these and give best possible patient care.  We are a small but friendly team who work closely together, as well as with our respective MDTs, to maintain CPD and drive innovation and quality.  

Main duties of the job

The B8a Speech and Language therapy (SLT) will provide a highly advanced clinical service predominantly to the inpatient areas at the Royal United Hospital, with responsibility as Dysphagia Lead for all the trust settings. 

They will provide clinical and operational leadership and expertise to the Speech and Language Therapy team at the RUH.  There is scope for this role to develop into an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP), depending on training opportunities and individual experience.  The post-holder will hold responsibility for the SLT Led Videofluoroscopy (VFS) Clinic and the Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) service, as well as leading on the development of skills and knowledge in dysphagia across the team.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent qualification
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Evidence of successful completion of postgraduate degree or specialist development and training such as Advanced Dysphagia or FEES
  • Experiential and advanced training as evidenced by highly structured self-directed study as part of continuing professional development (CPD) with professional portfolio.
  • MSc in advanced practice (or similar)/demonstration of working at Level 7 across the 4 pillars of ACP
  • Evidence of leading a team
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • MBSImp qualification
  • Member of relevant clinical interest groups

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience working within the field of dysphagia at Band 7 or above
  • Extensive experience of working with inpatients in an Acute NHS Trust
  • Level 3 VFS Competencies
  • Level 2b FEES Competencies
  • Tracheostomy Competencies including within Intensive Care
  • Proven experience of line management, supervision, appraisals and performance management.
  • Experience of applying evidence based practice in the specialist area and leading others to do the same.
  • Experience teaching, and signing for the achievement of dysphagia specific competencies.
  • Experience of leading and supporting clinical audit and service development
  • Evidence of involvement with research in SLT/dysphagia
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the delivery of service development.
  • Project management experience.

  • Ability to perform practical procedures relevant to advanced dysphagia assessment
  • Enthusiastic, highly motivated and committed to developing a service
  • xperience of requesting and fitting the appropriate tracheostomy attachments, including speaking valves.
  • Advance clinical reasoning and analytical skills in the management of complex dysphagia and/or communication disorders
  • Knowledge of requesting and interpreting radiological imaging and investigations used within the clinical assessment of dysphagia.
  • Evidence of effective leadership skill, including organisation and delegation
  • Take responsibility for own professional development
