Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of a Band 6/7 (depending on qualifications and experience) Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist at The Royal United Hospitals Foundation Trust in Bath. The position is for a full-time (1.0 WTE) substantive post, and could be shared between two part time workers. The post will entail working in a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, scientists, technologists and administrators, within the DEXA Service,  the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) and the Rheumatology Department.

The role will involve primarily supporting the care of patients with osteoporosis, vetting and reporting DEXA scans, monitoring treatment adherence, and reviewing patients in clinic. The post holder will work with our current osteoporosis specialist nurse, sharing duties and allowing the remit of the role to be extended. The post will provide opportunity for training and regular consultant supervision.

The post holder will be expected to provide clinical support and advice, ensuring that high levels of patient care are maintained in line with professional guidelines.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work according to the NMC code of Professional Conduct and NMC standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and relevant professional guidelines and carry continuing responsibility for the diagnosis and management of patients:

Independently assess new and follow-up patients at osteoporosis outpatient clinics. Decide on patient management, recommend suitable treatment and follow-up.

Independently review BMD measurements and write reports to the patients GP,  recommending suitable treatment and follow-up.

Co-ordinate and further develop the FLS based at the RUH

Implement hospital wide systems, to ensure correct, safe and efficient delivery of osteoporosis treatments to patients.

Provide an osteoporosis telephone helpline for patients and GPs

Provide specialist osteoporosis education and training to various audiences.

Contribute to the development of the osteoporosis service through audit, meetings, protocols and training.
