Nuclear Medicine Clinical Imaging Assistant

The Clinical Imaging Assistant is appointed to support the nuclear medicine technologists and radiographers in a clinical and clerical capacity. The post holder will assist in providing a diagnostic and therapeutic service to both inpatients and outpatients.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

 

 Assist and supervise patients before, during and after scans and procedures. Being attuned to patient’s needs, reassuring and comforting and providing drinks and meals when necessary. 

     Assist the work of the department by helping as requested e.g. moving patients, fetching items, collecting bloods from wards as necessary, ordering hoist and cleaning.

Undertake various clerical and administrative duties when requested e.g. taking and making phone calls, preparing clinic documentation, writing up the whiteboards for the following days clinics.

Provide a tidy, well stocked and organised environment in order to optimise working practice by monitoring stock levels and expiries, and keeping cupboards and supplies tidy.

 Insert and remove cannulas from patients and take bloods when requested.

Perform some equipment setup and testing

Monitor for radioactive contamination of waste and rooms, decontaminating as appropriate

1.      Follow the Local Rules with regards radiation protection.

 

2.      Follow procedures with regards to infection control.

 

3.      Escort patients from waiting room to scanning room/injection rooms and assisting technologists as required.

 

4.      Help patients on and off scanning beds and chairs and transferring less mobile patients to and from scanning beds adhering to manual handling policy.

 

5.      Assist and supervise patients before, during and after scans and procedures. Being attuned to patient’s needs, reassuring and comforting. Providing drinks and meals when necessary.

 

 

6.      Take patients to the toilet and assist as required and cleaning of associated equipment. Occasional emptying of catheter bags and cleaning of patients where they have soiled may be required.

 

7.      Escort for patients to and from wards when necessary and act as a porter when requested.

 

8.      Report any concerns about deterioration in patient's health, while in the department, to a technologist or radiographer. Follow hospital policy with regards unwell patients e.g. SBAR

 

9.      Provide privacy for patients and respect confidentiality at all times.

 

10.  Insert and remove cannulas from patients (including paediatric patients) when requested.(training will be given)

 

11.  Take bloods from patients having GFR tests (training will be given if required).

 

12.  Be familiar with and able to use CRIS for patient queries, assisting technologists when requested e.g. scanning in of patient documentation and transferring radiopharmaceuticals received to CRIS (training will be provided).

 

13.  Assist the work of the department by helping individual members of staff or groups as requested by any of the NM Technologists/Radiographers e.g. moving patients, fetching items, collecting bloods from wards as necessary, ordering hoist and cleaning.

 

14.  Undertake various clerical and administrative duties when requested by senior staff e.g.taking and making phone calls, preparing clinic documentation, writing up the whiteboards for the following days clinics, (training will be provided).

 

15.  Provide a tidy, well stocked and organised environment in order to optimise working practice.

 

16.  Monitoring stock levels in stores cupboard and informing technologists of any discrepancies/new items needed for top-up list.

 

17.  Keep Stores cupboard tidy, rotate stock and check expiry dates on all items in department.

 

18.  Set up equipment as requested or when necessary (vital signs and Pulse- Oximeter).

 

19.  Put ECG electrodes on patients and connect them to the ECG machine as requested for cardiac studies.

 

20.  Perform glucose monitor control test every morning and perform patient monitoring (training will be given).

 

 

21.  Perform certain tasks on gamma cameras when signed off as competent on training record e.g. Change collimators.

 

22.  Perform routine balance and pipette QC, recording results as appropriate (training will be given).

 

23.  Clean pat slide and check for damage after patient use. Sign relevant documentation and maintain slide sheet exchange

 

24.  Clean equipment in clinical and staff areas as requested or with autonomy.

 

25.  Monitor and record fridge temperature daily.

 

26.  Perform daily/weekly checks on the defibrillator. Check contents of defibrillator trolley weekly.

 

27.  Return expired emergency drugs box and anaphylaxis box and collect replacement when necessary.

 

28.  Check emergency alarm system in the department weekly.

 

29.  Order supply of linen when necessary and make up the bed in the waiting room when required.

 

30.  Monitor and dispose of clinical waste bags and sharps bins in line with departmental procedures.

 

31.  Monitor dispensing room, injection rooms, toilets and waiting room for radioactive contamination at the end of each day, recording all results and decontaminating as appropriate.

 

32.  Making and auditing radioactive spills kits; deal with radioactive spills (training will be provided).

 

33.  Transport radiopharmaceuticals from and/or to Radiopharmacy.

 

34.  Transport radiopharmaceuticals, contamination monitor and other sundries to the Cardiology department for myocardial perfusion clinics.

 

35.  Put remnant radiopharmaceuticals,in lead pots or syringes in the radiation store cupboard at the end of the day ensuring cupboard is locked. Dispose of vials or syringes the following day and organize for any lead pots to be returned to Radiopharmacy.

 

36.  Assay and then note the residual syringe activity after injection when required.

 

37.  Attend staff meetings and participate in CPD sessions.

 

38.  Discuss with line manager any suggestions for changes in working practice or environmental control.

 

39.  Participate in clinical audits (such as hand hygiene and environmental)/ research projects as directed.

 

 

40.  Be involved in open discussions with the Medical Physics and Nuclear Medicine team to explore how existing procedures could be changed to improve radiation safety.

 

41.  Participate in introducing all new members of staff and visitors to the routine of the Nuclear Medicine Department.

 

42.  To undertake further training and development, in order to maintain and develop personal skills, up-to-date and effective practice and knowledge in relation to the role through continuing professional development.
