Cardiology Clinical Research Fellow

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST6-8)

Job overview

The Bath Cardiovascular Research group, established in 2000, are particularly interested in studying the effect of intensive, individualised rehabilitation programmes on  cardiovascular health.  Our group tackles cardiovascular disease in an holistic manner, involving a range of specialists.  We draw on expertise from cardiologists, radiologists, dieticians, personal trainers, human physiologists and behavioural scientists.  Through well established research links with the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI), Newport Hospital and North Bristol NHS trust, in addition to active research collaborations with Bath, Oxford and Bristol Universities we are delivering innovative treatment interventions. Our group has commercial contracts with HeartFlow Inc., Biotronik and Caristo diagnostics to support and evaluate the effect of our research.   Following a competitive process Heart Research UK (HRUK) awarded ‘The Bath Cardiovascular Research’ group a research grant to undertake a multi-centre feasibility study in the area of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD).  We seek to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow (ST6+ equivalent) to join the group to deliver this proposal.  The position is funded for 2 years (0.8 FTE), with a view to a further 6 month extension dependent on the successful achievement of milestones.  There is an expectation of this work leading to a higher degree (MD or PhD) via the University of Bath (Professor Dylan Thompson, Department for Health).

Main duties of the job

This position may be of interest to someone with an interest in interventional or preventative cardiology.  CMD is an emerging area of research interest.   Initially the post holder will be required to submit ethics applications so a keen eye for detail will be required.  Subsequently there will be a need to communicate and collaborate effectively with both research sites to ensure the smooth roll out of the study.  Patients within the study require a set of diagnostic test and follow up appointments so good organizational skills will be pivotal.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties:  The post will involve 0.2 FTE cardiology clinical attachment.  This will be to provide outpatient care only.  A nominated consultant will have clinical oversight and provide advice and guidance as required.  There is no ward/on-call commitments associated with this position.

Research Duties:  The post holder will be expected to set-up, co-ordinate and complete a multi-centre feasibility research study involving the RUH Bath and Bristol Heart Institute.  This will examine the impact of  a dedicated 1:1 diet and exercise rehabilitation programme on angina burden for those suffering with CMD.  It will explore the feasibility of delivering a larger randomised controlled trial (RCT) in the future.

The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with both centres and complete ethics applications.  It is expected that the postholder will also actively seek research grant(s) to help fund a future post.

Enrolled patients will have a number of baseline assessments including a quantitative stress perfusion MRI, transthoracic echocardiogram and cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) so any experience with these diagnostic tests would be an advantage.

General Requirements:      Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post holder will be expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders, financial instructions and code of expectations of the Trust.
