Job overview

We are looking for a Locum Consultant to join the Recovery Team in Bath on a fixed Term contract until July 2025.

You will be working alongside another full time consultant Psychiatrist and a SAS grade Doctor (9PA) as well as a range of Doctors in training.

Based in Bath NHS House, the Recovery Team provides Care co-ordination and specific interventions to those with severe and enduring mental health problems referred internally from the Primary Care & Hospital Liaison Team, the Intensive Service, liaison service and Inpatient wards. 

The Recovery Team covers GP surgeries in Bath and North East Somerset and operates 5 days per week from 9am to 5pm.   The post holder will divide responsibly for covering GP practices in BaNES with their co-consultant, currently this post covers the practices in central Bath.  The Team runs Clozapine and Physical Health monitoring clinics weekly, MDT and business meetings, and reflective practice opportunities.

At present the service remains integrated with the Local Authority and so also provide the social care responsibilities for people under the care of our service.

We have a close working relationship with the other local services, including the Psychological Therapies team to be able to offer a range of evidence based psychological interventions.  The locality has 10 substantive consultants in post work in close proximity, and offers a range Supporting Professional Activities.

Main duties of the job

Provide clinical leadership and consultation for Recovery Team members. To actively participate in team and personal caseload management              and Assess and treat patients as requested by Care co-ordinators                    working closely with GPs in ensuring continuity of care between                      Primary and secondary sectors

  • Review those patients for which he/she is Responsible Clinician in the community and periodically review those taking Consultant only prescribed medications and review or supervise the review of those receiving long acting anti - psychotic injections
  • The Consultant will deliver direct interventions to service users at a level of intensity according to need including those service users who require an assertive approach who are difficult to engage. This will include on-going assessment, diagnoses (including review and clarification) and treatment of mental and physical health needs.
  • Regular attendance at the weekly Team Meetings.
  • Assessment and treatment of outpatients in clinics.
  • To hold CPA meetings for outpatients.
  • To visit patients in their own place of residence if clinically indicated.
  • To liaise with other parts of the service and GPs and non NHS organisations wherever applicable.
  • To liaise with the Intensive and Inpatient services as appropriate to facilitate the smooth handover of clients between services.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient setting.

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
  • Understand principles of teaching.

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
