Lead Medicines Optimisation Pharmacy Technician

This is a fixed term post until 03/01/25, applications are welcomed from within the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin system as well as further afield on a secondment basis.

The post holder will work as a member of the small, friendly Medicines Optimisation Team for NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (STW ICB) Integrated Care Board . The role will involve project work, supporting the delivery of the medicines value and transformation agenda, focussing on key clinical projects and medicines optimisation priorities for the ICB and wider system.  Working alongside the other Lead Pharmacy Technicians and Senior Pharmacists for Medicines Value and Transformation within the team, they will support the Lead Pharmacist for Medicines Value and Transformation in driving forward the ICB’s medicines optimisation strategy and medicines value agenda providing high quality, evidence-based prescribing advice and medicines optimisation support. They will support with the development, implementation and monitoring of projects to optimise medicines use, improve patient outcomes and enhance productivity and value for money for the system and wider NHS, enabling long-term financial sustainability.

The post holder will help lead or support delivery of projects and clinical audits to maximise safe, cost-effective best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care; this may also include development of educational events and resources for clinicians and Medicines Management Team members on medicines optimisation and prescribing.

The post holder will need to be confident at delivering presentations and providing clinical information to a wide audience from patients to primary and secondary clinicians.

As this role will largely involve supporting/managing projects, the post holder should also be able to demonstrate excellent clinical, organisational and communication skills together with the ability to influence change for the best possible outcomes for patients.  

The post holder will be required to work with external stakeholders including provider colleagues across the Integrated Care System (ICS), patient groups, commissioning support services, national commissioning board, local authority, public health and strategic groups/committees, care providers and the voluntary sector.

The post holder must hold professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a pharmacy technician and have the relevant post qualification experience in primary or secondary care.

You will be appointed to NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin ICB. Your base will be the ICB Headquarters in Wellington, Shropshire. NHS STW operates a hybrid working arrangement where you will be required to work from the office base for part of your working week, based on your contracted number of hours. Travel may also be necessary across other sites and clinical settings as appropriate, therefore you must have the ability to meet the travel needs of the post. 

Our medicines optimisation team will work with multiple providers across the system,  and will be responsible for providing medicines optimisation support to the practices we serve, developing and implementing medicines optimisation projects for implementation within each practice, delivering savings and  improving the quality of medicines use.

The post holder will be asked to work as part of the medicines value and transformation part of the medicines management team to support delivery of the national medicines optimisation opportunities and medicines value priorities for the system. 

This role will involve project implementation and behavioural change, therefore there will be a requirement to provide education and training to other health professionals, system partners and care settings as required.

To support the implementation, delivery, and monitoring of medicines optimisation projects to:

o improve health outcomes;

o reduce avoidable harm;

o improve population health and reduce health inequalities

o avoid waste,  enhance productivity and value for money promoting sustainability

To provide advice and support on matters relating to medicines optimisation and prescribing

To support NHS STW commitment to commissioning  safe and effective services that meet the needs of the local population

To support system wide integration and collaboration on medicines optimisation projects and work streams, working with system pharmacy colleagues and wider health and care professionals to ensure that medicines practice in health and care delivery settings are joined up.

To improve the health of the population by optimising the use of medicines through:

o promoting the safe, evidence-based and cost-effective use of medicines;

o supporting implementation of the shared system formulary

o providing up to date, unbiased information about medicines, treatments and care pathways;

o supporting practitioners and patients to make the best use of medicines;

o to support the implementation of national guidance on the use of medicines (NICE appraisals and quality prescribing targets).

o minimising the harm caused by medicines;

o support the development of local guidelines and resources and care pathways to optimise the use of medicines;

o supporting other health and care providers to deliver medicines optimisation in a way that is high quality, efficient, safe, well led, timely and responsive, effective and equitable.

To support the development, implementation, delivery and reporting of the annual  Medicines Optimisation cost improvement programme (CIP), working collaboratively across the ICB to influence and monitor prescribing costs, promote cost effective prescribing and minimise wastage of medicines.

  • A minimum of three years post qualification experience involving direct contact with other healthcare professionals, patients and carers
  • Significant experience in project management, data analysis or supporting change management processes.
  • Experience and understanding of evaluating and measuring prescribing performance.
  • Experience in communications and stakeholder management

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures for specialist area to degree or equivalent level acquired though training, NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent CPD portfolio maintained and shows robust evidence of high quality CPD

  • Further qualifications beyond MTO3 or NVQ3 level or complementary to these qualifications

  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
  • A good understanding of the legal framework for prescribing and the national NHS medicines optimisation agenda
  • Ability to use data systems and prescribing dashboards to monitor prescribing data
