Staff Nurse / ODP - Pre-Operative Assessment

NHS AfC: Band 5

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Pre Operative Assessment Department for a Staff Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner.

We are seeking to appoint an ODP or Staff Nurse who is enthusiastic, highly motivated and hardworking to join the department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Ideally you should have proven experience in an acute surgical or assessment setting, be able to use your own initiative, work well under pressure and have a flexible attitude towards your work. The successful candidates should also be able to demonstrate a desire and willingness to contribute and to be proactive in the development of our POAC.

Our priority is to ensure a high quality focused and safe assessment service where patients are treated with dignity and respect.  The Pre Operative Assessment service determines the fitness of patients for anaesthesia before surgery and optimises their health prior to admission if indicated.

Skills in medical clerking, heart and lung assessment, ECG recording and interpretation and phlebotomy skills are an advantage.  Training will be provided, which will enable the successful candidate to build on existing skills and knowledge.  Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are absolutely essential for this role as you will be liaising on a regular basis with the wider multidisciplinary teams.  IT skills are also essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised patient care, working in partnership with patients, their carers and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional needs are met.
  • Formulate and deliver high quality patient care without direct supervision, seeking guidance on actions that are outside agreed defined standards.
  • Recognise changes in patients’ conditions which require the intervention of others and ensure that timely referrals are made or escalation procedures enacted as appropriate.
  • Ensure patient safety is maintained at all times. Record and report adverse and potentially adverse events and assist with investigation of such events, ensuring learning is shared with the wider team(s).
  • Record information about patients in a safe, accurate and consistent manner using appropriate tools and techniques, including electronic and written formats as close to point of care as possible.
  • Access and use patient clinical diagnostic information to inform clinical decisions.
  • Utilise decision support tools and techniques to support the delivery of safe and effective care.
  • Make appropriate and timely referrals to members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies to ensure patients’ on-going physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are met
  • Administer medicines to patients in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Medicines Management and Trust policy.

Working for our organisation

We are a small friendly team and support will be provided to the successful candidate in respect of training. You will work autonomously but have the support from the consultant anaesthetists and senior experienced staff.

The unit is currently open between 7.30am and 17.30pm 5 days a week,  (Currently only Monday- Friday ), cross site working may be necessary as per contract to maintain the service.  An option of home working is currently being developed.
