Job overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is looking for fixed term (12 months) Locally Employed Doctors in General Surgery who will be predominantly based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) with responsibilities across both Trust hospitals sites. It is an opportunity to join a friendly and dynamic hospital team with a range of specialty interests and an excellent reputation for providing an educational and supportive environment.

The post-holder will be encouraged to develop their own special interest such as to complement those of the existing Consultant staff and further their position as an independently valuable member of the team.

The post-holder will contribute to the General Surgery (ST3+) full shift rota alongside 16 accomplished medics all with a passion for delivering high quality care to our surgical patients across both the Shrewsbury and Telford sites.

These posts have an elective component that contributes to either colorectal, upper gastrointestinal (UGI) surgery or vascular surgery with participation on the General Surgery middle grade emergency rota.

Contribution to an out of hours on call rota is core to this role.

 

Main duties of the job

Clinical

·       Elective upper gastrointestinal and general surgery operating, under the supervision of a consultant surgeon. This elective activity is based at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. 

·       The management of an unselected emergency general surgery take and associated surgical procedures, under the supervision of a consultant surgeon.

·       Direct contribution to the regular review and care of surgical inpatients involving close team working with the wider surgical workforce.

·       Provide surgical middle grade on call cover at Princess Royal Hospital, Telford for adult and paediatric patients, under the supervision of a consultant surgeon.

·       To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.

·       To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.

·       To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.

·       To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways both in an elective and emergency setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the General Surgery full-shift rota. The 1in16 rota is compliant with the terms and conditions of the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract, 2008 & 2021 Specialty Doctor Contracts and WTR and has been carefully designed to maximise training opportunities for doctors whilst maintaining a safe and efficient service, with an even spread of long days and nights. The post holder will be 1 of the 16 doctors contributing to the full shift rota with a weekend frequency of 1:4.5 with 7-night shifts across a 9-week reference period and is prospectively covered for annual and study leave.
