Healthcare Assistant - A&E

NHS AfC: Band 2

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has become available to recruit Healthcare Assistants to work within the Emergency Department at The Royal Shrewsbury  Hospital. We have both full time and part time positions available.

We are looking for people who are caring and compassionate and who have strong communication and observation skills to deliver excellent patient-focused care in a challenging environment. As a Trust, our guiding principle is “Putting Patients First” and that means giving our patients the best care and experience we can.

You must have good communication skills and be able to work well as part of a team. You must be flexible in your approach as you will be required to work days, nights and weekends to meet the needs of the service. In return we offer you a strong commitment to teaching and education, whilst working within a friendly and supportive working environment and a team who are committed to providing and maintaining high standards of patient care.

Main duties of the job

Provide support to patients to maintain their hygiene needs. This may include actions such as: Bathing/washing/ Care of mouth, hair, nails and eyes

Accurately undertake and record patient observations (at a frequency determined by the Registered nurses), reporting any abnormalities immediately to a registered nurse.

Escort patients to and from other wards and departments under the direct instruction of the Registered nurses.

To move patients safely using techniques taught by the Manual Handling Team, including the safe use of mechanical and non-mechanical manual handling aids.

Working for our organisation

The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Emergency Department has undergoing a significant refurb currently to accommodate a safe and deliverable service to the patients and families of Shropshire/Telford & Wrekin. The refurb consists of an extension to our majors area, new ambulance receiving area and a dedicated paediatric area along with a Urgent Treatment Centre for minors and GP stream.

A very exciting time to join our ED with opportunities to develop with formal Royal College Nursing - Emergency Nurse Competency based assessments with accreditation supporting all nurses to work in majors, minors, resus, paediatrics and mental health. For HCA’s and ECT’s (B3 in ED) our Clinical Nurse Educators will take you through the robust training program.
