Communications and Engagement Manager

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Communications and Engagement Manager to be the lead for all communications and engagement activity relating to a programme. You will be an excellent communicator with creative vision and strong project management and engagement skills. You will have knowledge of service transformation and be a confident negotiator, experienced in working with internal communications, writing and editing content for a range of audiences.

The role includes staff, patient and public involvement, skills in organising and leading events and stakeholder mapping. It will also include supporting with media management, social media, website management, proactive reputation building and PR activity.

You may be required to work at occasional evening and weekend events and travel across the county. Previous experience of working in a similar environment is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an excellent communicator with creative vision and strong project management and engagement skills. They will have knowledge of service transformation and be a confident negotiator, experienced in working with the media, writing and editing content for a range of audiences. They will also have experience of using a variety of digital communications channels including websites, intranets and social media.

Flexibility, confidence, diplomacy, creativity and engagement skills are a must, plus evidence of working with senior-level individuals in a complex environment. The post holder will be expected to engage with internal and external "customers" to understand their requirements, manage their expectations and deliver results.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant degree level qualification or equivalent professional communications qualification plus training and/or experience in a relevant communications field to Masters level or equivalent.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development with strong communications and engagement element

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of delivering internal and external communications and engagement in an NHS or other politically high profile environment, including stakeholder, patient and public engagement.
  • Demonstrable track record of successful delivery of communications and engagement activities at a senior level.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of planning and delivering activity as part of high profile engagement, pre-consultation or consultation activity.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Listening to stakeholder viewpoints and utilising feedback to dynamically adjust engagement strategies.
  • Highly self motivated and able to work to strict deadlines
  • Experience of communicating complex information to a range of audiences.
Desirable criteria
  • Developing and implementing communications and engagement strategies that support service transformation.
  • Ability to negotiate with senior stakeholders on difficult and potential controversial issues
