Job overview

An exciting opportunity has risen in the Transfusion Laboratory Services department at the Welsh Blood Service for the role of Head of Red Cell Immunohaematology Laboratory.

We are looking for an experienced leader with strong blood group serology background to join our dynamic team responsible for the provision of the all Wales Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) reference service. 

The successful candidate will lead the RCI laboratory and play a critical role in the delivery of the Welsh Blood Service strategic objectives.  They will be required to demonstrate compassionate leadership skills and proactively manage competing demands.

They will be responsible for the safe provision of the 24/7 RCI service which includes routine working hours and on call. The will be able to adapt in a fast paced and changing environment.

Main duties of the job

Key aspects of this role include:

Ensure safe, effective and efficient delivery of high quality RCI service.

To be a subject matter expert in red cell Immunohaematology providing expert scientific advice.

 Participate in the wider scientific Transfusion community, creating effective national and international partnerships, supporting 

benchmarking and shaping the future of the RCI Laboratory service.

 Monitoring performance of routine and highly complex laboratory testing ensuring achievement of key performance targets.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Specialist Biomedical Scientist qualification in Transfusion or equivalent level of training
  • Masters of Science in Transfusion or relevant science field
  • Evidence of a recognised management/leadership qualification or equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of reference red cell serology testing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a Blood Service or hospital Transfusion service at a senior level
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment
  • Evidence of successful implementation of service developments and new initiatives
