Job overview
This post is fixed term for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.
Would you like to expand your scientific skills, broaden your knowledge, and gain experience working in a genetic laboratory? If yes, we have the opportunity for you!
The Welsh Transplantation Laboratory has an opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist. This opportunity is offered as a 9 month secondment for internal candidates, or 12 months for an external candidate.
The Welsh Transplantation laboratory is based within the headquarters of the Welsh Blood Service and provides specialised services to support kidney, pancreas and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, platelet immunology, and immunogenetic testing.
You will join the existing team to support service delivery during the implementation of a new laboratory information management system (LIMS) in the Welsh Transplantation Laboratory. In return, we will provide you with full training and a rewarding experience where you can gain transferable skills to achieve your career ambitions.
Main duties of the job
The role will be primarily based within the Transplantation Services genetics laboratory, where you will learn to extract DNA, perform, analyse and report a range of genetic tests using state of the art next-generation sequencing and real-time PCR technology. This includes non-invasive prenatal testing for foetal RHD genotyping, genetic assays to support disease diagnosis (e.g. HLA-B27 for ankylosing spondylitis), and pharmacogenetic testing to prevent drug hypersensitivity reactions.
Please note there will NOT be a requirement to work on-call for this post during the 12 month fixed term/secondment position.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
