Job overview

Support the safe and efficient delivery of the Occupational Health (OH) preemployment health checks and immunisation programme.
Undertaking of pre-employment screening for all staff groups, students and
volunteers referring to OH guidelines and policy including those undertaking 
Exposure Prone Procedures. Provide immunisation appropriate to their 
occupation/employment and exposure risk.
Using clinical judgment advice on pre-employment screening outcomes 
including possible adjustments and medical referrals. Assessing fitness to 
undertake role. 
Act as an advocate for the uptake of immunisations across the workforce.

Main duties of the job

Professional Duties
Identify, plan, and maintain the administration of the vaccine and immunisation 
regimes, relevant to the occupation, as per local guidelines and policy.
Administer immunisations, vaccinations and adrenaline if needed, according to 
Powys Health Board’s Patient Group Directives.
Undertake pre-employment health assessments for all potential employees in 
accordance with the DOH guidelines and Occupational Health policy with 
particular reference to “exposure prone procedures”. 
Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standards of quality assured, 
evidence-based practice e.g. safe cold chain storage of vaccines, and disposal 
of clinical waste.
Assist in targeting those staff / hard to reach groups who may not have taken
up an immunisation offer e.g the influenza vaccine.
Transfer equipment and vaccines to and from clinic sessions.

Ensure that high standards of infection control are integral to all aspects of 
clinical practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication
Approachable, motivated, and enthusiastic about working with staff groups.
Maintain effective communications with services, individuals, colleagues, and
Occupational Health professionals.
Work closely with members of the Occupational Health team.
Work closely with the Occupational Health Administration team, regarding 
immunisation enquires, and interaction in immunisation sessions.
Ensure accurate, secure, robust documentation and effective communication of 
all tasks.
Have regular meetings with the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Nurse and
wider team members.
Training 
Undertake mandatory and other training specific for the post e.g. Immunisation 
training, Basic Life Support, Anaphylaxis, Venepuncture etc.
The National two day minimum standards for immunisation training will be 
arranged if not already completed. Powys annual immunisation update sessions 
to be attended.
Skills in the delivery of immunisations, ensuring that data input is completed in 
the Occupational Health management system.
Participate in clinical supervision and educational activities.

Support training of colleagues, such as nursing students.
Evaluation
Excellent team working skills.
Prior to decision making, have a good understanding of the current issues 
pertaining to all Pre-employment vaccine requirements.
Able to identify resources and professionals to assist with queries. 
Able to seek out information from relevant sources to evidenced based practice
e.g. Occupational Medicine, Public Health Wales, Department of Health, Powys 
Immunisation Coordinator, Internal OH team members.
Planning 
Contribute to the planning and administration of the process needed to deliver 
the pre-employment checks.
Accurately record information on immunisation consent records if needed.
Report any adverse reactions to vaccinations on yellow card.
Report any adverse incidents to DATIX.
Keep an accurate electronic diary. 
Complete any expenses claims

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current registration with NMC
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Experience in Nurse led Practice
  • Understanding of the Occupational Health role of the Immunisation Nurse
  • IT literate - Microsoft Outlook, email and internet use
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and Assessing
  • National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training
  • Working knowledge of current Health & Safety Regulations

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Multi-disciplinary/agency working
  • Previous experience of providing immunisation in services/involvement in immunisation programmes
  • Health Promotion experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering immunisation programmes
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary multi-agency team
  • Experience of working in the community
  • Experience of clinical audit
