Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a Best Interests Assessor (BIA) to be part of a developing team. We are looking for a BIA who can confidently support the MCA/DoLS Senior Practitioner in the delivery of the MCA Improvement Plan and service development around the application of MCA and DoLS within PTHB.
This will include developing and delivering training and resources around MCA and DoLS, using a variety of mediums and creative approaches. The role will also include undertaking best interest assessments for DoLS on behalf of the Health Board and supporting the development of pathways for DoLS within the Managing Authority and Supervisory Body
This post is advertised as a Band 6, however applicants who do not currently hold all the necessary competencies to a Band 6 level are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be appointed under Annex 21 rules whereby 75% of the top of Band 6 will be payable during the first 12 months or until band 6 competencies have been completed.
Main duties of the job
Undertake the role of Best Interest Assessor and complete best interests and all supporting assessments within statutory timescales.
Communicate with the relevant person, their family or other relevant interested persons to assist with the completion of the Best Interest Assessment.
Manage challenging and sensitive issues with clarity and professionalism and escalate unresolved concerns to the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and Mental Capacity Act Coordinator and Senior Nurse Safeguarding. This includes communicating with the relevant person, their family or other relevant interested persons who may wish to raise a complaint, challenge a decision or process.

Essential criteria
- A professional qualification in Nursing or Social Work or Occupational Therapy or Psychology Degree level experience or equivalent in a Health/ Social Care discipline Evidence of further professional and or management development undertaken within the last 12 months Hold a Best Interest Assessor qualification from an accredited academic institution or be willing to work towards it once in post
- Sound knowledge of the following legislation: Mental Capacity Act and associated code of practice, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and associated code of practice, Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014
- Have significant post qualification experience Computer literate Sound knowledge of Safeguarding People at risk
- High level of effective written and communication skills Work as an autonomous practitioner and manage caseload effectively Demonstrate effective listening skills Ability to negotiate, challenge and manage conflict Ability to exercise individual judgment and consult where appropriate Innovative and ability to problem solve - open to challenge and to review decisions in response to new evidence Time management and prioritisation skills Assertiveness in appropriate situations
