Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a new post. The clinical component of the post comprises 8.5PAs with 1.5 SPAs. The post holder’s duties will be at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Specifically, the and respiratory in-patient components will be carried out at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford or the Horton Hospital Banbury (or both). Other respiratory components are delivered at the Churchill and Horton General Hospitals, the community diagnostic centre and potentially community hospitals.

The post is to support the delivery of predominantly COPD services integrated across OUH NHS Foundation tTusts and Oxfordshire Integrated Respiratory Network. Whilst this is a replacement post due to retirement, it is envisaged that the post holder will evolve the service to all aspects of integrated respiratory care, with the opportunity for domiciliary, ambulatory and virtual working.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and mould a pioneering integrated respiratory service.

The clinical component of the role will provide senior expertise in managing adults with respiratory airways disease and general respiratory out-patients, as well as in-patients and on-call working, with approximately a 13 week ward duty period per annum. It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations

Essential criteria

MB BS or equivalent.
CCT in Respiratory Medicine or registration on GMC Specialist register in Respiratory Medicine; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.

Competed fellowship in airways disease or integrated respiratory care

Experience

Essential criteria

General training in Respiratory Medicine to specialist level or equivalent
Training in all aspects of management of lung cancer and pleural patients.
Competencies in Bronchoscopy an Pleural Procedures
Broad experience in specialist inpatient and outpatient Respiratory care in a hospital setting
Ability to make decisions at consultant level

Desirable criteria

Experience of leading multidisciplinary MDTs, including primary and secondary Care overlap.
Experience of working in and leading ambulatory respiratory services
Sub-specialty experience in Respiratory Airways Disease and Integrated Respiratory Medicine

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to work as a consultant physician in a large teaching hospital.
Experience of working with or training in clinical NHS hospital management
Good personal and interpersonal skills and track record of ability to work in multi-disciplinary team
Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed.
Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
Clear understanding of current clinical governance structures and evidence of active contributions to clinical governance during specialty training.
Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities.
Evidence of active interest and participation in research

Knowledge of the implications of the Long Term Plan and the major conditions strategy
Understanding of the relevance of CORE 20+5 for respiratory patients

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
