Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Palliative Medicine Department at OUHFT is a growing and dynamic department containing a Community Service offering specialist support to patients across Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire, a Hospital Service working across all four acute hospital sites and two inpatient hospice units (Sobell House and Katharine House) with 28 bed capacity between them as well as a burgeoning Supportive Palliative Care service with well-developed models in Renal Supportive Care, Oncology, Haematology and Cardiology. The Department has recently undertaken a large multi-million pound expansion with the Rapid Intervention in Palliative and End of Life Care project creating an enhanced co-ordiation Hub, Hospice Outreach and Home Hospice Teams and Hospital Rapid Response.

The successful candidates will be part of a team of 8 consultants, currently consisting of Prof Bee Wee, Dr Mary Miller, Dr Tim Harrison, Dr Victoria Bradley, Dr Matthew Carey, Dr Charlie Bond, Dr Victoria Hedges and Dr Farzana Virani. In addition, the team consists of three associate specialists, seven specialty doctors, two fellows and seven doctors in training (3 palliative medicine, 4 general practice). The scope of work covered by the medical team includes clinical care in the specialist service (inpatient, outpatient including Living Well day services, community specialist team, hospital team, lymphoedema and bereavement), clinical care and leadership of end of life care across the Trust, education and research. The consultants rotate key clinical responsibility for different parts of the clinical service every 1-2 years as mutually agreed.

The postholder’s base will be either at Sobell House Hospice at the Churchill Hospital or at Katharine House Hospice but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

MBBS or equivalent
MRCP / MRCGP or equivalent
Entry on the specialist register to practise palliative medicine (CCT or CESR route both acceptable) or within 6 months of achieving entry
Full GMC registration and licence to practise

Desirable criteria

Diploma or other qualification in palliative care
Research degree
Worked in a tertiary referral hospital
Experience of working in or with community based services

Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
