CONSULTANT GYNAECOLOGIST

 

Applications are invited to apply for the above post in the Gynaecology and Maternity Departments at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive consultant post. The department is seeking a capable and motivated doctor who enjoys working in a both a secondary and tertiary care setting  and wishes to effect change and improve care for patients within this service 

 

The post holder will join an existing team of  NHS gynaecologists/ Gynae-oncologists and  University of Oxford Clinical Academics, who together provide both a local gynaecology service to the population of Oxford and a highly specialist tertiary service in Gynae-oncology, urogynaecology, reproductive medicine, endometriosis. This post is a Trust wide position with clinical sessions at the Horton Hospital/ Ramsey Treatment Centre in Banbury and the John Radcliffe Hospital sites.

 

The successful candidate will join the maternity service which provides general obstetric services to the local population – 7500 women per year are cared for within the Trust. There are also tertiary referral services in fetal and maternal medicine, supported by a Level 3 neonatal unit.

 

The post holder would be undertaking general gynaecology sessions with gynaecology on call and 2 sessions every week with maternity team (C-section list and delivery suite.

 

Main duties of the job

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust provides gynaecology services across three sites (John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, Horton Hospital Banbury and the Churchill Hospital, Oxford). The successful applicant may be required to work across all sites. The post holder will be expected to undertake general gynaecology clinics and outpatient hysteroscopy. The successful candidate will be expected to keep up to date with emergency gynaecology, contributing to the ‘hot week’ (including the GP advice and guidance service) and giving advice to the specialist Early Pregnancy team when on call.

 

The post-holder will undertake theatre lists (the majority of the surgery undertaken is minimal access) at the John Radcliffe hospital (including regular (1:4) weekend lists) and daycases at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

 

The post holder will manage in-patients at the John Radcliffe Hospital and undertake gynaecology on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:10, paid at a Band A supplement. Some clinics may take place outside of the acute trust and it is anticipated that over time more clinics will be located elsewhere.

 

The candidate is expected to undertake an all day C-section list once a week with the maternity team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching and examining clinical students, and training junior doctors.  It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.  The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. We are particularly interested in recruiting someone who will lead the ST3/5 registrar teaching programme for trainees in the deanery

 

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

 

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up-to-date with his/her relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.  Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification
  • CCT or equivalent (or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of application)
  • MRCOG/FRCOG
  • Full GMC registration
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC) at the time of starting in post
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC
  • MBBS/MBCHB
Desirable criteria
  • Higher medical degree

Professional training

Essential criteria
  • At least one gynaecology ATSM or equivalent
  • ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM or equivalent in hysteroscopy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of competence in gynaecological surgery for benign disease.
  • Evidence of competence in undertaking C-sections
  • Experience managing and treating emergency gynaecology cases.
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients in a tertiary setting
  • Evidence of experience working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Effective administrative and time management skills.
  • Evidence of leadership of service improvement project leadership within a gynaecology setting
  • Evidence of having implemented change within the clinical setting
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
  • Good written English. Highly level- open communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training for O&G trainees
  • Evidence contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activi- ties
