Job overview
We are seeking an experienced children's nurse to undertake the exciting challenge of Deputy Sister on Childrens CDU. Childrens CDU is a 24 hour medical unit which links closely with Children’s Emergency Department to provide care for children who need further assessment, observation, continuation of treatment or to await results. The unit also sees GP referrals and ward attenders which gives varied dynamics to the busy unit. CDU is friendly and ensures the cohesive team works closely together and provides strong support and opportunities to develop.
Deputy sister/Charge Nurse involves coordinating shifts, maintaining safe care and clinical practice, as well as considering skill mix in every shift. It will provide you with the chance to build upon your leadership skills, and to gain a broader understanding of many aspects of management.
Main duties of the job
As Deputy Sister, you are required to demonstrate and promote best clinical practise at ward level, maintain the standard of professional practice and decision making. Apart from the clinical role, the job also has leadership and management aspects in terms of managing the ward team with appraisal, mentorship and education as well as development needs. We are looking for someone who has the right qualification, experience, and expertise to carry out this role. Full time and part time hours will be considered.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Supported by the Ward Sister you will act as a role model and be responsible for deputising in their absence along with the other members of the Senior Nursing team. You will be a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent clinical and communication skills, with an ability to lead and motivate others. You will also enjoy teaching and supporting junior staff as well as pre and post registration students.

Education, training and experience
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse (UK recognised qualification)
- Past experience of working in Children Hospital (1)
- Minimum of 2 years acute care registered nurse experience or evidence of ongoing professional development (e.g. PCC course, Neuro course)
- Degree level study or working towards a degree
Desirable criteria
- Post-graduate qualification relevant to an area of practice
- Evidence of commitment to teaching staff and students, including mentorship qualification or practice assessor training
- Ability to facilitate and participate in research/benchmark and audit programmes

- Evidence of own recent updating
Clinical practice and leadership
Essential criteria
- Ability to manage and run the ward within the boundaries of the role through effective communication and initiatives
- Experience of leading and supporting a team in clinical area
- Ability to lead the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge/experience of: - audit in practice - implementation of quality improvement measures - risk management
- Experience of managing change from a personal and leadership level
- Insight into managerial issues in relation to people and resources
