The new consultant is required to join the Horton on call group, part of the Oxford University Hospitals with an interest in Orthopaedics, Trauma and Regional Anaesthesia. The positions would suit anaesthetists seeking to have a consultant career in a major teaching hospital with considerable expertise in complex trauma, interventional radiology and major surgery.
The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is one of the largest departments in the country and is proud of its reputation for having a friendly, diverse and inclusive Anaesthetics team, supported by outstanding surgical colleagues. The department provides a comprehensive elective and emergency service for a wide range of surgical specialties.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder’s duties will be primarily based at The Horton Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations: John Radcliffe(JR), Churchill(CH), Horton Hospitals(HH) and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital (NOC).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
The focus of this post is the delivery of high-quality anaesthesia at The John Radcliffe and Nuffield Orthopaedic theatre suites. In addition, there are flexible sessions in the posts allowing the post-holder to maintain an interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours the post-holder will be non-resident on call to provide emergency cover for Horton General Hospital. This may change in the future depending on the service needs.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through Appraisal.
Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

Qualifications/Training
Essential criteria
- Medical degree FRCA or equivalent
- CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent with entry in Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or within 6 months of the date of interview)
- GMC Full registration and Licence to Practice
Desirable criteria
- Possession of other related postgraduate qualification such as FFPMRCA, MD, BSc, MSc or PhD
- Additional advanced training or fellowship in a relevant sub-specialty ALS/ATLS/APLS Course Instructor
Experience
Essential criteria
- To be able to work independently and perform as a member of a team
- Additional advanced training in Trauma, Orthopaedics and Regional Anaesthesia
- Evidence of ability to manage complex clinical problems
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of completion of additional training in other relevant sub-specialty
- Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at Consultant level
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Leadership skills
- Effective administrative and time management skills
- Training in clinical management
- Knowledge of the NHS and the role of Clinical Networks
- Understanding of the complexities of working in a regional referral centre
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training
- Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team in a teaching hospital.
- Leadership and Management qualification
- Willingness to undertake additional roles at local, regional and national levels
- Education qualification, Diploma in medical education
- Experience of leading audits, implementing change and monitoring compliance.
- Peer reviewed publications
- Participation in research projects.
