Research Nurse/AHP/Practitioner

NHS AfC: Band 6

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

We are a responsive and innovative Foundation Trust that places our values of Caring, Safe and Excellent at the heart of everything we do. We take great pride in our staff and believe that investing in you is key to us achieving our vision of outstanding care delivered by outstanding people.

We work with a wide range of partner organisations to deliver care and support to people in their own homes and from a number of hospitals and community bases. We focus on delivering care as close to home as possible for people of all ages across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset.

We know Job Descriptions and Specifications can sometimes be long which can be off-putting for some people, and we don’t want to let that deter you from applying.

We actively support anti-racism, equality, diversity, and inclusion so, if you’re excited about this job opportunity and you meet our Trust values, but feel unsure about applying, then please get in touch and we will be happy to have a conversation with you.

We are also committed to increasing diversity in the workforce, that is why we actively encourage applications from those groups of people who are currently under-represented, which include amongst others: people with disabilities; men from all socio-economic backgrounds; people from diverse ethnic backgrounds; and people from the LGBTQI+ community.

Good luck and we hope to hear from you!

Job overview

The Memory and Cognition Research Delivery Team is made up of research nurses, therapists, practitioners and assistants.  We support the set-up, recruitment and delivery of a range of different types of clinical research involving brain health and people with dementia or mild cognitive disorders.  The studies we provide range from those involving questionnaires, to a therapy or intervention provided at home, to more involved clinic-based drug studies.

To do this, we work closely with our Research and Development colleagues in finance, governance and informatics.  We also work in partnership with the Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility, the Mental Health Mental Health and Community Health Research Delivery Teams, t the University of Oxford, Department of Psychiatry and Oxford University Hospitals NIHR Clinical Research Network - which enables us to use our specialist skills and contribute to a wider range of clinical research.

Our studies take place in research facilities in Oxford and Aylesbury, as well as in participants homes across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, however you will be required to work from home on a regular basis.  All necessary equipment for this will be provided.

As this is a fixed term contract or secondment opportunity until August 2025, knowledge and experience as either a clinician in older adult’s mental health services, or as a researcher is key to you getting the most from the post.

Main duties of the job

This post supports and coordinates the provision of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) portfolio studies for people with Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and their relatives.  We also recruit healthy volunteers to some of our studies.   The role involves the development of physical health assessment, global and psychometric rating skills.  It also requires working closely with the Memory & Cognition team, the wider R&D team and study sponsors, to deliver a variety of commercial and non-commercial studies.   As part of the team, you will actively network with Memory Clinics and other potential referrers in the third sector and be involved in areas of service development.

You will be responsible for assessing and managing the care pathways for patients and carers participating in clinical studies focused mainly on memory and cognition. This will involve the recruitment, education and monitoring of trial patients and the collection and documentation of accurate data including collection and management of tissue and/or samples.  You will work collaboratively with the clinical trials team and the wider multi-disciplinary team in the management of your own caseload of clinical trial patients. The role involves using an in-depth knowledge of trial protocols and their application in practice, alongside a working knowledge and compliance with the local, national and international research regulations.
