Job overview

We have a great opportunity for a research-interested and motivated person to be trained and develop research delivery skills, assisting us in recruitment to our memory and cognition studies and carrying out study activities under the supervision of our experienced research nurses/AHPS and practitioners.

We are looking for someone with related experience, this may be in the field of clinical care or administration in a health care setting.

 

Main duties of the job

The Research Assistant role will support the delivery of research studies across Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (OHFT), within the Memory and Cognition Research Delivery Team.

This varied  role involves working from home, visiting participants in the community and delivering studies from the Warneford Hospital and the Whiteleaf Centre Research Suite.  It will support the recruitment to and daily running of research studies under the supervision of Study Coordinators.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Clinical

·     To support recruitment to studies and the collection of trial specific investigations as required by the research protocol.

·     To provide ongoing information, education and support to patients (and their significant others) regarding clinical trials.

·     To maintain accurate documentation of patient events in nursing, medical and trial notes.

·     To act appropriately to report serious adverse events to the study coordinator.

Research

·     Support study delivery and undertaking assessments as per protocols.

·     Proactively promote research and the local portfolio of studies widely across the network.

·     Work per GCP and research governance standards for all aspects of work practice.

·     With supervision, identify patients eligible to enter clinical trials.

·     Conduct assessments with study participants: physical and psychometric/motor rating scales.

·     Ensure that clinical trial recruitment records are accurately maintained.

·     Ensure that case report forms are accurately completed, in paper and electronic format.

·     Contribute to recruitment strategies, identifying any barriers to recruitment to trials and work proactively as part of the study team to maximise recruitment. Support and assist in the development of action plans as required.

·     Attend meetings relevant to the nature of the job.

·     Travel as required by the network to research locations across the organisation.

Administration

·     With supervision, ensure that clinical trial files are archived as required.

·     Ensure that all data is handled per the Data Protection Act and in a confidential and where necessary anonymised fashion.

Education and Training

·     Assist in the education and support of clinicians and service users.

·     Attend national meetings and training as relevant to role.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent previous experience in older adults care, mental health, research or administration
Desirable criteria
  • First Aid Course/ Basic life support including AED
  • Foundation Degree in Health or Social Care

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge in the field of dementia, mental health, older adults, research or administration
  • Well-developed computer skills
  • Good time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical experience of working with older adults within dementia, mental health and with their carers
  • Awareness of obligatory regulations and legal requirements of NHS research
  • Phlebotomy trained

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a health care setting
  • Experience of handling confidential data.
  • Experience of ordering stores and maintaining equipment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of research in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of processing blood samples in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience of conducting physical observation procedures
