Job overview
We have a unique opportunity for an Assistant Psychologist to join our team on a split basis across Oxford Clinic (Medium Secure Unit) and Wenric House (Low Secure Service).
In this role, you will be to supporting and enhancing the psychological care of clients within these two wards.

Main duties of the job
Your key duties involve assisting with the planning and delivery of psychological interventions (group and individual); undertaking interview and psychometric assessments; assisting with the development of research and audit projects and teaching and project work.
You will be working closely with and will be supervised weekly by a qualified psychologist, who will also be your line manager. On a day to day basis the post holder will manage their work and time independently.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To undertake protocol-based psychological assessments of clients, including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.

To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problems, including risk of violence and protective factors, under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist, in inpatient/residential settings.

To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups.

To contribute to the training and support of other staff in psychological care.

To assist in the design and implementation of service development, audit and research projects within the service as required, under supervision of qualified clinical psychologists.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programs, in consultation with the postholders professional and team/operational manager(s).

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree in Psychology 2.1 or above
- Or a lower second class honours degree in psychology as well as completion of further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
- Entitlement to graduate membership of the BPS
Desirable criteria
- Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous work as an Assistant Psychologist
- Previous work with people with mental health problems
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering psychological interventions in forensic services
- Experience of working with people with severe and/or complex mental health difficulties
- Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of software for databases and data analysis, especially SPSS
- An understanding of psychology applied to healthcare.
- High level communication skills (written & verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
- Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers, and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance
- An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
- An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health and forensic context

- High standard of report writing

- An interest in working with people with mental health problems or other disabilities
- An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines
- An ability to remain psychologically minded in the face of difficult interpersonal situations
