Job overview

We have an excellent opportunity to join our Fracture Prevention nurse team and one of the country’s leading teams  in Osteoporosis and Fracture Prevention. 

Fragility fractures could be prevented by timely interventions to reduce fracture risk. A Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) systematically identifies and treats all eligible patients aged over 50 within a local population who have suffered a fragility fracture, with the aim of reducing their risk of subsequent fractures.

We will provide you with training to increase your knowledge and skills in this exciting team through national and local training programmes. The role involves working within a team, virtually and physically across all sites, patient experience being at the forefront of our service.

Experience in this field is desirable but not essential as full training will be given.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be trained to identify, assess and recommend treatment for individuals at risk of Osteoporosis who are either inpatients at the hospitals, attending as an outpatient or having been identified through radiology/artificial intelligence.  

The successful candidate will also be expected to support, develop and help manage the delivery of a patient centred fracture prevention service within the OUH trust .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Specialist Practitioners will:

  • support, develop and help manage the delivery of a patient centred fracture prevention service within the OUH trust (the NOC, John Radcliffe and Horton sites)
  • identify, assess, recommend, and monitor treatment for individuals at risk of osteoporosis and falls either whilst an inpatient on the trauma unit or in the outpatient setting and be able to explain the reasoning behind the decision
  • be able to impart difficult/ distressing news to patients and support them in the decision-making process (including risk/benefit conversations) following their diagnosis
  • provide advice, support, education and health promotion on the prevention, diagnosis management and treatment of osteoporosis and falls for patients and health professionals and to use a range to strategies to communicate this effectively
  • work with primary care, secondary care and other related agencies to promote awareness and increase knowledge of osteoporosis and fragility fractures and work towards achieving the Royal Osteoporosis Society Clinical Standards for FLS.
  • ensure accurate records/ documentation of care are maintained in accordance with the NMC or equivalent and trust policies

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Professional membership with the NMC or equivalent
  • Knowledge of NHS and healthcare policy
  • Experience of working in a senior nurse role
  • Experience of audit/ research
  • Post graduate level working evidenced via a continuing professional development portfolio
  • Good use of IT skills
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience of teaching/presenting
  • Work effectively within a team environment as well as individually
  • Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to impart difficult, distressing news to patients

Desirable criteria
  • Orthopaedic/Trauma qualification or recognised training in osteoporosis/ falls management/bone densitometry
  • Experience of caring for patients with osteoporosis/ falls/ other metabolic bone diseases
  • Advanced history taking skills
